remove crankshaft pulley

OK - trying to remove the damn crankshaft pulley bolt on a motor that is out of the car on an engine stand. Impact is turning the motor over. Any other ideas?

drop a piece of rope into the cylinder to prevent the piston from reaching top dead center should do it. make sure you can pull it out after.

you can rent the tool for about $68 from any autozone, kragen, etc.... then once you return it you get all your money back. trust me, it is worth it.

Rope in a cylinder will work. If the rope sheds some material it remains in the cylinder, nylon rope shouldn't shed. The cylinder should coming up on the compression stroke (both valves closed) when the rope is inserted into the cylinder to prevent the possibility of bending the valves.

my solution is much better and efficient...have done it on about 20 engines and works everytime!

put a 21mm socket to a breaker bar
connect the breaker bar to the bolt on the camshaft and leave hanging
make sure that the path tha the breaker bar will travel is free and that it will only hit a metal part
remove coil plugs
get in the car and give it a crank...car sholdn't start due to missing coil wireharness and the engine will take care of removing the bolt.
mind you this only works to remove the bolt...it will not work to tighten it back.

like i said, i do this everytime i need to rmeove that bolt and never had any issues...no need for an impact gun.

note: if it doens't remove it on the first or second crank, stop. execive force may damage the engine.
note: when i say crank, these are QUICK cranks, don't do it as if you were to start the car by holding the key on the start position, rather, give it momentary starts.

I've thought of trying this but i was always to paranoid of effin something up. good stuff.

Purchase the special shop tool.
This, or
Just get a universal crank pulley holder.
This.
Just hit the bolt with an impact wrench. Makes short work of it.

He states the engine has been removed from the car and is sitting on an engine stand

yeah I used the starter trick before once too. The key here is that you need to let the breaker bar have like 45-90 degrees of free travel before it hits - don't tie it down. That way you get momentum to break the bolt loose. But I ended up getting an Ingersoll Rand impact with like 700ft#. It breaks stuff loose that I used to find unbreakable.
It's a little messy, but instead of the rope trick you can hydrolock the cylinder by filling it with oil on thru the plug hole on the compression stroke.

It would've been nice to also submit a solution instead of just pointing out how all of ours are wrong.

If he's using an impact gun and it's not working, then either the impact gun is crap or he's not doing it right. I had a buddy that was trying to remove his crankshaft bolt with an impact gun and a bunch of extensions - basically, the extensions were eating up the force of the impact gun and turning over the motor.

To the OP, do you have the socket directly connected to the impact, with no extensions in between.

Also, how are you planning to tighten the crank bolt? A crank pulley holder might be worth getting or borrowing.
