remote hatch release

My alarm has the capabilities to trigger a hatch or trunk release from the transmitter. So I bought a hatch release kit, only then I realized the door wont open on its own by simply unlatching it.

So my question to you people is what are the black things called that basically lift the door up (I am completly blank at what they are called) and could I get more powerful ones that could open the door? or is there a better way that would open the door when the latch is triggered? (other than manually) I can figure out the unlatching part, I just need suggestions on the other part. I'm not lazy or anything, I just figure it would be a cool effect with the remote start since I open it every day after school anyways.

Actually he means a actuator not a solenoid. They used one on monstergarage on a rerun on Sunday to lift the door on a Porsche 944. The problem is they are expensive and it would have to be fabricated into the hatch area and then attached to the tailgate. An actuator strong enough to lift the tailgate would run $300-$400 plus labor to have it installed.

I think he's looking at the dampers and thinking they are actuators. They don't do any lifting. They keep the hatch from moving too fast.

They dont really keep it from moving too fast (they do but thats not their main purpose really). They hold the door open when its up.

I dont know if I can get some with more force, or if I have to find some other way of pushing the hatch the 2 or so inches it needs to open on its own.

I already have the motor that will unlatch the door. It just needs a little push to open on its own.

What you need are called struts. They're just mini gas charged versions of shocks. Any auto parts store carries universal ones. Just measure from the center of the attachment points at the hatch's full lift and that'll give you the correct length you need. They have a few different mounting methods, ie..screw or clamp-on, i don't have a p5 so i couldn't tell you which one you need...

I'm not too worried about closing it again. I can do that by hand. It would cost too much to do that anyways. I think those door poppers might work for what I need it to do. Thanks everyone.
