Reliability of a Mazdaspeed

2000 Protege LX
Well I currently own a 2000 mazda protege lx but I am looking at several different mazdaspeeds. So i would just like to know, do they hold up well, and are there any common problems? What issues would you expect around 70,000 miles (specific to this car, not just mileage issues). Thanks for your help.

There are comon issues wit the car, WGA on the turbo always seems to go bad, tunnig issues with the ECU, the hot pipe cracks at the BPV nipple, the LSD breaks at the spot welds and there are people that go through J pipes. That's about all I can remember but there are a few more, though I would have a hard time letting go of mine if I ever had to.

dude if you could get a A4 1.8T AWD and you'll thank me later.
don't worry if its +100K , just do the basic stuff and it will still be a beast.
my friend has ove 100K and boosting 22 psi on stock motor + chip + 3" down pipe, that's a AWD that won't give up on you.

Reliability of MSP's is a headache, period.

In all the years i've owned my msp, it only failed to get me to work once, and that was when my lsd kicked it.

Ya there is some issues with the car but if your willing to put some $$$ you'll enjoy it for sure. I have come 2 love my car and it loves me back or else its going to hit something very hard.

once you change the parts that are trouble prone, it's alright..

SMIC, LSD,exaust manifold,pipes and BPV

I have had the tuning and the dying sub problems but none of the others. Other than that it is a great car. I autocross it but I keep up on the maintenence.

Some people have big problems and others minor it depends on the car

I would also say it depends on the way you drive your ride...pedal to the metal and redlining it at 6800rpm + a couple of badly balanced mods = a sure destruction!

Drive with your head, balance out your mods in a good logical way and redline the car mentaly at 5800 rpm to limit overstressing the pistons and you will be okay.....Pistons and components do have a break point!

threat the car right and you'll get good reliability out of it. Keep it well maintained and serviced.

Mine is top shape and i treat her right!

My opinion, if you are going to keep it stock...DONT BUY AN MSP.

If you are into tuning rides and going aftermarket then it is quick, rides on rails, and looks very nice even stock! I love modding my cars so the fact that s*** breaks and that the car has a bad tune from the factory just gives me an excuse to put better more reliable parts on it.

The things I love about the MSP. It looks nice and people at gas stations and all over the road always ask "what is it?" or tell me they like my ride. It is limited production so you dont see 5 of them in a row at a stop light like EVos and STi's. And finally with some work they can be pretty quick.

You nailed that dead on! Rock On!!(headbang)

Well your all lucky cause i take very good care of my cars. let it warm up, oil pressure drop. use the good fluids
mobile one synthetic oil
ate super blue brake fluid
red radiator fluid
penzoil synchromesh tranny fluid
ect. ect.
oil changed every 5k

And everything is still going wrong :(

There are a list of "known" problems with the MSP

Your fluids dont have an effect on the stock sound system failure, battery or motor mounts.

And i have no idea what happened to your motor, either a factory freak, or burning up the highway in 4th gear redlining.

Well my car has 56k on it and i have no problems what so ever.

My exhaust mani looks like its starting to develop a little crack but thats about it.

Then again i dont beat on my car. It rarely sees over 4 grand.

Well your lucky, the manifold is a part of the emissions system and it carries a higher milleage warranty. Look into the paper work for the emissions warranty I think it's 70k or 100k miles.

so for a 18 yr old looking for a "fun" reliable car thats turboed, would it be worth it? and in time i will mod it since im well ummm, OBSESSED with cars, and just assume mod it for the fun of working on it.

Oh really? I'll definitely look into that.
