Rebuild

01 ES 2.0T
I have had my protege ES 2.0 for 3 years and in those 3 years i've only put right at 4k miles on it. I did a few mods: Turbo, lowered, gauages etc.... I blew the motor and it has just sat there at my garage for about a year now and i am finally deciding to FULLY rebuild it.
Money is not really a problem i just sold 2 of my hatchbacks and my integra all turboed as well. All i really know is Honda and thats why i'm here asking you guys what works best for these cars. Im interested in keeping the IHI turbo thats on it now or is there a better selection out there?

maybe he gunned it too hard... with STOCK interior .. and not a forged interior... thats kinda the only way i c how the engine can zoom zoom boom in 4k miles

What i meant by 4k was, that is all i put on it. i bought it with 63k. The wastegate started sticking and doing anywhere from 14 to 17 lb spikes. That and i cracked my #3 piston and ran the car one night anyway. won the race, but blew my motor on the way home.

what I would like to know is how did you blow a motor with 4k miles on it?

you make it sound like a motor with 4k has some sort of anti-blowing properties?

a motor with 4k can blow just as quick and easily as a motor with 40k.

It's still impressive though. Almost like driving it off the lot and blowing the engine.

Not to stray off topic, but i unfortunately put the buddy club kit on the car as well. does anybody want a kit? I personally feel that it takes away from the car showing its true potental.

what is the model of IHI turbo you are using? vj-11?vj-23? etc
what are you using for fuel management?
what are you doing to control timing at 17psi?
do you have a wb02? Do you have good gas?

I asked what you did to blow it, which you obviously explained. you said you built nothing but honda's which are stronger motors then the FS-DE unless the internals are forged.

i mean as far as turbo's and internals if have found alot of info of this site as well as protegegarage.com which is very impessive site, but my biggest deal is the tuning of the car and the head work. I see what piston's and rods you guys run, but not too much on cams, vavles, springs etc....
Sorry, one more question: Are the cranks in these motors good for 400+ hp. Both my hatchbacks were LS Turbo's one pushing 400 and the other killing that mark and I used the stock cranks.

Try here. You will want to run a standalone for a big build like that. Head work will be custom and pretty expensive. Then you will have to worry about the tranny, 3rd gear likes to go out on this car, and possibly the LSD if you have one of the original ones.

if you are looking for 400whp you are going to need a built motor. There are many great motor builders and people who sell them on this site if you do not want to do the work yourself, or you can just buy pistons and rods. I would not put much faith in the stock crankshaft at 400whp, i believe there is also some sort of oil starvations issues at that point also.

in all honesty, if you are looking for a RELIABLE 400whp you are better off find ing and rebuilding an old FE-DOHC (sometimes called FE3) motor and trans, getting custom mounts, axles and a stand alone engine management system. The factory motor has been known to hold 400WHP and is more robust them the great bp motors. The cylinder head flows better then any other 4 cylinder mazda I have seen. They are cheap as hell and since kia used a detuned version of the motor in some of its small suvs you can get alot of parts for cheap. For the price of a forged FS I bet you could rebuild a FE3 and do all the conversion work for less if you did it yourself and have a much nicer motor that can rev nice to 8k in the end.(with vr6 valvesprings installed :) )

Or you could just pull your head, upper and lower oil pan, push out the current piston/rod combo, slide in your new forged pistons/rods/race bearing and be happy with 330+ whp with great amounts of torque as well.

I would suggest a set of pistons rods and bearings, consult MPI nick to have your stock turbo reworked to the kind of HP levels you are looking for an buy the best damn EMS your account balance can handle. Then go tune.

yeah i have already shattered the 3rd gear in the car once before. Its kind of a headache dealing with the car. The only reason why i just don't sell it is because it was my daughters first car ride home.(yeah thats right. 1st ride-TURBO!) I'm just used to making 350 hp by slapping a turbo on the B-series doing a quick street tune and rolling withg it.
I def. have alot more respect for you guys and the cars you build

the more i read the more it seems you were pushing some crazy horsepower on the stock block....how much psi and hp were you pushing?

All i was running was stock boost sometimes 10-11 lbs. I never had it dyno tuned. My intercooler blew off on me ALOT and one night it happened when i was running this guy, I had the lead so I just kept on gunning it. Next thing I knew Dr. Detenation had my ass in the palm of his hand and BANG! Blown Motor.
