The LH output shaft seal was leaking. I thought I had time to wait for my pope mani to come in to replace the seal, mani, and install a new timing belt all at once. I was wrong. Yes, I understand it was stupid not to periodically check fluid level knowing there was a leak. Started the car one morning and I hear a grinding sound. It makes the sound at a stop only when the clutch is engaged and while moving regardless of clutch position. Checked the trans fluid level, It was pretty much completely dry. I added about 2 quarts until I could watch it drip out of the output shaft seal. The leak had gotten that bad. Started it up again and it was much quieter but could still hear the grinding. The car drives normally.
I am in the process of removing the engine and transmission from the car (Want to clean up the engine bay while I am at it). Once removed I am going to take a peak in the transmission to see what damage I caused. At a minimum I plan on purchasing a rebuild kit and replacing the bearings, synchros, etc. and LSD (with an upgrade).
The car has 108k. I have no intention at all of getting rid the car. I have unlimited access to a garage with a lift, tools, etc. I plan on one day going forged.
Current Mods:
Custom 3 exhaust w/highflow cat
Pope downpipe
Corksport silicone pipes
AWR 70 motor mounts
Exedy Stage 1 Clutch
Is it reasonable to assume that it will only need a rebuild kit and LSD?
Does anyone have any info on the trans that could help me out?
What would be a good choice for a diff?
Not purchasing anything until I get inside the transmission.
