Sounds about normal depending on driving style and maintenance. They are only 280 treadwear tires and although 20k is a bit on the lower side they shouldn't really last past the 30k mark no matter what.

So what are you looking for on your next set? The same soft rubber or something that will last 5 or 10K more? How much do you want to spend? I went up too the 245X40X18 size and it was less at that time!

Rear Tires Wearing Down To Cords

Is It Normal For The Rx8 To Wear The Rear Tires Inner Edges To The Cords??? My Front Tires Are Wearing Evenly With No Outer Or Innner Edge Wearing Prematurely, see Picture Of Tires

Does the rx8 have a problem concerning rear tire wear. my 05 rx8 with 18" sp8090s which were oem have 20k on them. as I posted 20k and my tires are wasted. the fronts are ok ,worn down evenly, but both rear tires are worn down to the cords showing on the innerside of each tire., I have heard of camber bolts and problems the same with the mazda 5 but have not heard anyone complain about this on the 8 .replacing tires friday with continental extreme DWS , (need to travel in the snow) .,my question is .is this normal for our sport suspensions on this car or is mine out of alignment

Rx-8's don't normally wear uneven. You need to have the alignment checked. We have seen some people wear them out in 11K, that all depends on your right foot. The Dunlops 8090 have a "UTQG" rating of "280" and the Contis have a rating of "540". So you will have a harder rubber so it will last longer but at the same time it might not be as grippe as the softer tire. What size(the 245X40 size will give you a little more width and only cost $10 a tire) are you getting and what is your OTD $$.

Im buying 225/45/18 cont extreme contact dws., same size as my oem tires
front tires are worn down evenly ,only the backs are down to the cords and then only on the inner edge of both back tires

I got about 24K then one tire was down to the wear bar so I replaced them. I rotated them twice.

I rotate every 3k miles, each oil change. First set had some cupping at around 22k miles so replaced them with same, tread was ok but the noise was pretty bad. New ones are looking fine so far.

This is exactly what happened to me. I couldn't take the noise so I replaced them. I got the 245X40X18 RE750 BS Potensa and love them.

Dung,

What question are you asking?? why your inner tires are worn out?? I feel like you are saying the same thing over and over.

Bottom line is that it all pending your driving habits and tire pressure. If your pressure is low, in general your outer tread will wear out first. If your camber is off (neg camber), then your inner will wear out first. Usually negative camber is caused by lowering your car.

On RWD cars, rear tires will always wear out faster than front. If you drive hard, than you will not get tire manufacturer's recommended mileage. One advice, 8s are meant to be driven hard.. And many veteran rotary guys will tell you, you need to drive it like you stole it! Its actually better for these engine :)

Regarding Cupping.. Make sure you get your wheels balanced correctly. There is a difference between static and dynamic. Some shops will only static balance the wheels and more likely cause cupping.

^ I agree, Rotaries like to play hard. Be ready to buy tires. The RX8 is well balanced, but anything RWD will eat the tires. Also, if you tire looks evenly worn except the inside edge, have them check your toe during your next alignment. It will help if you rotate your tires often as well.

Beautiful cars Herblenny!
