Rear Subwoofer Idea

Hell just get a bass tube man because thats about the same sound your gonna end up with. Better make it Pyle or something just to make sure. I'm just not a firm believer in free air.

Maybe you haven't heard a good free-air installation? Many are poorly done without proper sealing between the front and back waves which will kill the sound. Or, the choice of driver may be not suited to free-air. You need a driver with a high Qts (preferably .5 or above) which means that it has a very stiff suspension. If you don't, it'll sound like crap. Free-air installs with large diameter speakers can be a bit power hungry too due to the speaker's stiff suspension.

Ok I'll agree with that. All in all...he'll save more money going with an enclosure. The way I see it...a four channel amp won't be sufficient to push 2 "correctly installed" and worthy free airs. So another amp should deffinately be considered. And sealing is going to be a pain because everything in that car rattles or has a nice gap to it. :) Goodluck...again...I still say enclosure...maybe even a truck box to keep it price friendly.

Never said it was easy, just possible. ;)

There are some 4ch amps out there that would work, like a US Acoustics 4085, but you'd need some drivers that would present a total impedence of 4ohms. To date, I haven't found any candidates that excel in all of the following:

(1) Suitable for free-air
(2) Able to present a single 4ohm load with two drivers
(3) Have a high Xmax
(4) Are reasonably priced (max of $75/each)

Still looking though. (wrc)

The Dayton Quatro's should still sound pretty good in free-air with only 85w to each speaker.

yes free air can sound just as good as sealed, when it comes down to it, they are the exact same thing just one is designed for allot larger box, the problem lies in the fact that when people hear free air they just assume u can throw the subs in back with no box and be done with it. this isnt the case at all..

a single sub is all thats need in a small enclosure with a 4 channel amp to power the entire system. 35x4 soundstream amp was enough to push my 6 mids and highs up front and a single 12 to get me 132db. wich isnt bad for that small of an amp.
