I was wondering if the other P5's rear license plates are mounted this way?

Mine has a black bracket that the rear plate is then mounted to....are they all like this are did they do something weird to mine?

Nope...they're like that. At least mine is as well. I think that's because Mazda didn't want to fab another hatch cover just for the plate holes. Kinda makes sense, but they coulda done a more elegant job.

Once the Spring comes, I'll take mine off and see if I can Dremel most of the ugly s*** away so it looks cleaner. That's the problem with buying a car in Autumn -- there's no time to tinker with stuff!

It would be nice if someone could make a clean, maybe carbon fiber license plate bracket.. hint, hint.. hehe...

that mounting system sucks. it doesnt even have holes for the bottom two screws of the plate. what dildo thought that up?

LOL...Dildo, indeed.

The rattle when you shut the hatch is what gets me. Sounds like the plate is going to drop off.

Someone on here mentioned that they shut the hatch with pressure to the rear tag, and that has solved the problem for me. Still looks kind of like crap, though.

Well, if it turns warmer here, or I get bored this weekend...I'll pull mine off and figure it out. Kinda dumb that they just "band-aided" the friggin' thing. But they coulda put the f*ker on/in the bumper and made it look like total a$$!

Thought I would figure mine out, too, but once you get it off you need a drill/dremmel/some sort of power tool to change anything. Good luck, though.

my thing is simply the no bottom screw holes. i can add double sided foam tape to ease the noise since i will do that anyway to keep it from rattling when i get subs one day, but the whole thing is retarded because it looks stupid without a solid connector at the bottom.

IM really starting to hate the noise from it! Everytime my subs hit the thing rattles. If anyone has an idea to stop the rattle let me know. Thanx

Easy Fix:
Take the license plate off, and remove the black plastic piece. Mine had marks from where the screws for the license plate were tightened town all the way and scratched away at the paint. Seal the original holes with silicon, and drill into the scratch marks from the license plate holes. The original holes wont fit the US plates (further apart)... Put a thin strip of foam all the way around where the license plate is going to cover slightly smaller in size than the actual plate. I used a dry erase marker to make an outline of the plate after mounting it in the new screw holes. I also put a small bolt through the holes and a small nut on the back side of the door (had to take off the plastic trim piece). You rarely have to change your license plate, so its not too much of a hassel to take that panel off to access the bolts. I also took the rear wing off and put foam around that (theres a how-to here on that). The rear door has ZERO rattleing right now. Even with the sub up all the way. No more ugly plastic piece, and no more rattle.

Seeing how I already did it, maybe I will just take some pics when I get home. Gotta tear the car up some more for it though. Not sure if I will enjoy doing that.. Pics definatly tho...

El - That's a thought...I'd rather use the existing holes. But I'll have a better idea once I look at the plastic mount. I'm hoping to remove everything you can see, so you only see the plate itself.

I'll post more once I get moving on it. Maybe this week or weekend.

You will prob need to do some meguires 3 step on the outline of where the old plate was. Mine left a hairline scratch all the way around.

Eeeew, definitely gonna get on it this weekend. Bought my car in Sept, so hopefully it's not that bad.
