Rear Licence Plate "FIX"

Who wants that junky-sounding "boing" when the hatch is closed? Mazda dropped the ball on this one, it's up to us to pick up the slack if so inclined. Nothing wrong with that.

In NC, teh stickers they give you to put on it are made of that crazy no-peal break-away material, I can only assume this is so people can't steal 'em. So i have to take the plate off and spend a good 5 minutes working on it to get that sucker off. I find thsi is also a good time to wash the plate (so it gets cleaned at least once/year, lol).
The other option of course is to just stick the sticker on top of the old one. used to do this, after many years that thing would be like 1/2" thick, haha.
But that looks crappy and since this is my "good" car, I'm avoiding those habits.

We always crack you up. Some like to beat on their vehicles, while others tend to take great care and pride.

Yes, you do. i love seeing how different people are.
I do happen to take pride in my car; I just tend to spend my time worrying about other things.

it also annoys the crap out of me when the hubby closes the hatch, he doesn't use the plastic hand thingie, so there are always fingerprints in my hatch dust layer.

omfg end his life! I don't allow anyone to touch my hatch door because it seems like no one can figure that out haha.

whoa dim I just read your post about the possible part revision.. that's wild, I want the sweet JDM rear license plate bracket :D

I was excited to get mine! Except it was like ~$50. Oops.

I just drilled new holes in my plate where the screws needed to go. Coated the back end of my plate with foam (dynomat would work too). and screwed the plate into the original bracket holes. Looks pretty clean!

That's cool. Sounds like a good option. This thread might become a library of "solutions" to this crappy design. (RTM) (peep)

I just stuck a piece of black foam in there, wedged it up near the top real good. problem solved. it jiggles but there is no noise

You 3 guys are sorta lucky to have the plate on the rear bumper instead of on the hatch/trunk... aside from the fact that it makes the hatch look empty and the bumper busy, it definitely does fix little issues like these that us perfectionists have with the Protege5 :)

Sweet, How long of screws did you use?? Don't want to be screwing into the hatch. And did you just screw right into the plastic or did you drill some small holes first??

I'd say the screws are about 10mm long.

Basically what it does is it "clamps" the license plate to the holder. There are no modifications necessary at all. Just put the screws into the bottom to holes, lift up on the plastic holder a bit, reach around and put the nuts on the screws (bolts) and tighten. My screws (nylon) don't even contact the hatch at all.
