Rear Fog Light - found the OEM part, now what?

One of the easiest mods on a VW (my last car before the MS3) is to wire up the rear fog light. Here's a GTI example:

And a Touareg:

If you don't know what a rear fog light is or what it's for, here's the Cliff's Notes version: This light is an additional light of equal color and brightness to a brake light. It is also physically separate from the brake light to avoid confusion. It is used in extremely thick fog to make your vehicle visible from behind, as in the GTI pic above.

I found out how Mazda does this in Europe. Instead of 2 reverse lights mounted to the rear hatch, there is only one reverse light on the pax side; the driver's side is the rear fog light. (New Beetles are the same, except the reverse and fog lights are in the bumper.) The good news is, I found the OEM replacement part for this:

The bad news is, I have no idea what to do with it. It obviously has to be wired in. The easiest way to do this would be to tap off the front fog light wiring, and thus let the stock fog light switch simultaneously control both front and rear fog lights. Where's the easiest, cleanest location to tap off the front fogs, and how would I cleanly run a wire to/through the hatch?

The more correct way would be to somehow source the E-spec fog light switch (it should have 4 positions: front only, rear only, front + rear, and all off) and wire it in. Do we have a source for foreign-market OEM parts, and know anything about their wiring?

Finally, cars with rear fog lights typically have an instrument cluster indicator for this. Do the US-Market MS3's have such an icon, and if so, how do we activate it?

PS: Before you say "who cares" to this thread, consider that some of us live in areas of pea-soup fog and don't want our shiny new MS3's rear-ended by one of the many inattentive idiots out there!

sounds kinda cool, but i really have no idea about wiring. As for parts, you could try talking to some of the parts vendors on here and see if they have a connection for EDM parts

Has anyone else noticed that the left taillight on about 70% of the 2002-2005ish models of the Audi A4 that I see appear as if they are a rear foglight? True or just typical German engineering? :P

True. Luxury European cars - even the ones sold in the USA, LOL - have one or both rear fog lights ready from the factory.

I see it on a lot of US cars, and usually the driver has no idea it's turned on. Pretty annoying to be behind that on a clear night.

I'm REALLY interested in the rear fog light, because I live in San Francisco.

I too am thinking about tapping the wire into the fog light wire. I just don't know how to do it...

Also, what happened to the link to the light? I couldn't find it anymore.

Please don't leave it on all the time. I hate when people do that. It's absolutely obnoxious late at night and makes me want to take my cordless drill to their tail lights...

I can explain how to do it through the already connected fog lights a through a relay box if you wanted to get gucci with it and make it look OEM. You'd replace the swtich with a relay. Pin 30 would be the battery side of the new wiring and 87 would be the the fog light side. If you still wanted a switch, then place it after the relay before the light. The down side to this is the light will have power only when the front fog lights are on. The resistor portion of the relay pins 85 and 86 would be where you would splice the power side of the existing fog lights if you have them. You can always wire it the way in the diagram and also with a relay that way it come on when the front fog lights are one and whenever you want. Let me know how you want it wired if you're really confused and I will try to help you.

Just trigger your relay with the front foglight power wires and run a new fused power feed for the rear foglight through the relay. I'm not sure if that is what t147 was getting at.

No electrical engineer here, but wouldn't it be easier/simpler if you just tap a wire into the wire that controls the front fog lights? So when the fronts go on, the rear will go on too?

The concern with that would be drawing too much current through that circuit although I think it would be okay. I'm just a stickler for doing things right :)

Hmmmm....that's what I was thinking about doing but going to have to rethink my strategy. I just had an EDM DS light installed on my car after my JDM light was scratched up in an accident. The socket for the rear fog had been wired into the turn signal so I had the shop that did the work wire it up with the rear parking light. I recently did the fogs on with parking lights mod and assumed (uh-oh) that the light would still turn off if I turned off the fogs.....that is not the case so some more re-wiring will need to be done.

Also maybe someone can help as to what bulb to use? I'm currently using a 194 size red led but it's as bright as the parking lights...so to be functional I'm looking for something that will be brighter. Pics for reference.

it can be wired to the front fog light however, as I was saying, with that, anytime the front fog lights are on, the back one will as well. Like I said, this is completely do-able but, if I were you, I would use a relay the way I suggested to alleviate pulling too much current on the existing OEM wiring.
