Rain sensing wipers - What am I doing wrong?

I thought they worked pretty well in the Fall, but I turn them off in the winter because they don't recognize snow until it melts sufficiently to appear to the sensor as rain. Our BMW X5 was the same way. Totally worthless in the winter. But in warm weather, this Mazda works much better than the BMW did.

Exactly the same situation. The first time I drove while it was snowing they sucked. I reset them to intermittent until after winter. Outside of winter the rain sensing work fine.
