Raced a wrx in MS3

On the highway 94 by St. Paul from a 50mph punch he got on it in front of me in the right lane, and I easily passed him and put 4-5 cars on by 90mph. I think it was a 04-05 wrx. We then ran side by side and hit it on the 3rd honk from 60mph in 3rd.... pulled another 4 or so cars once again. The car is quick, and has a nice interior, handles well, but the power is nothing compared to the 02 z28 that I had that put down 345ft/pds of torque and 331hp to the wheels :(

Um.... Duh?

wow a wrx man time to show these little punks that the wrx srt's and evo's arent the fastest thing in the world

I don't know if you've seen the recent motor trend article on the MS3, but they compared it to the WRX (non-STi). The only things the WRX came out on top with were 0-60, and abundant aftermarket support. The AWD system can just put more power down and get the car to accelerate faster than the MS3 without losing traction, however once they were moving the 3 blew it away.

They gave the 3 better handling, braking, comfort, fit/finish.... really everything except for the two things above.

So yes, from a rolling start you're going to kill a WRX, but starting from a full stop don't expect to kick it's ass quite as hard.

i think what they are really saying is, they need to make a ms3 that has awd...now that would be my dream

^^^ No, you just need to know how to drive..

true...but it would just make it easier on those that live in the climates more prone to snow...like me...(lol2)

no it cant take the evo but it wont be mercilessly slaughtered by it either, it could even be a drivers race. find a kid with an evo who doesnt know how t drive it and with some good driving you could take him in a ms3

from a standing start the evo should be able to take the MS3 no problem. AWD launches are hard to compete with. From a roll though the opposite is true, AWD vehicles tend to fall short compared with FWD or RWD cars.
I think from a roll the MS3 would actually probably pull away from the evo.

i want a rwd protegebut not to just beat evos but to drift..which evos cant do anyways without a conversion...yes!! but i'd have 500hp to the wheels just incase it turned into a drag race....ok ..it's a dream

if i had the $$$$$

S40 drivetrain modded to bolt on a 'speed3

and then stick a 2-rotor in there for good measure

must have been stock or very close to, because once the car is slightly modded it will run very very fast times. i have a buddy that had an 02 with a cobb stage 2/mbc/intake/up and down pipes/ and full tbe....was running 13.0's in the 1/4. daily driver. but he still couldn't beat my 91 mit. ecl. gsx. 12.9 ( which i bought for 1200 bucks and put 800 in mods into to run that fast)

but i love the ms3...if the srt-4 it's what i want i am buying for sure.

Neon SRT-4 or Caliber SRT-4?

I really like the Neon SRT-4s. I even like how they looked. Shame about the wal-mart interior though.

Anyways don't think driving skill has anything to d owith wether you pick AWD or FWD.

IMHO RWD > AWD > FWD

FWD is good for leisurely driving and forgiving handling and if tuned well, it can even be VERY fast around a track. But an equally well sorted AWD or RWD car will own the FWD one all day long.

gosh i remember when the SE-R's and SI's were out, and the MSP was like King kong.

:-(

i personally think it goes like this

AWD>FWD>RWD i hate RWD for any kind of DD and i hate it for driving hard. Drifting is a phase. and i bet theres more accedents with that Phase then the FWD Burnout Phase.(glare)

everytime i drive one i can just see it getting loose on a corner.
Thats not fun man. i dont care who you are, taking a 35mph corner at 50 on a wet road the slightest wrong move your off the cliff. with the msp i feel like i could go around that same corner in 3rd gear spinning the tires at redline. and not worry

I see where you are coming from. As an enthusiast, I think the thrill of driving a well balanced RWD car is unmatched. Using your skill and control to guide the car from apex to apex, feel the tail stepping out and correct it as you carve the perfect line from corner to corner.

So if I was to be buying a car to drive spiritedly or at a track or was willing to put in time to master. It would have tp be a RWD vehicle (ppreferably a Silver or burgundy 350Z)

Now AWD lets you have some of the fun of RWD (depending on the drivetrain bias) with the safety net of all 4 wheels gripping. It also nets you great traction off the line, in bad weather and the ability of just launching you out of corners. It also adds weight though and does not require the same finesse as RWD. Also there is the propensity for understeer. So for a family car AWD would probably be my choice say a Mazdaspeed 6 or an Audi RS4.

FWD give the car great chuckability and is the most forgiving handing wise so it's goot for hot hatched and cars with decent power but for an enthusiast dirver, FWD by far has the least fun dynamics. Understeer, Torque Steer, too much burden falling on the front wheels to both propel and steer the car. FWD is not a bad platform by any means. There are several GREAT FWD cars out ther the MS3 and VW's GTI being just 2 of many and the MSP and Inegra Type R being 2 old school examples. So for a car with decent pep that was just supposed to be fun to drive but not real hardcore sports car, FWD is a great platform. But eventually, you're gunna hit a horsepower wall where if you want any pretense of great handling, it's just not the best option anymore. Just my humble opinion.

Thats pretty much dead on. RWD is vastly superior to FWD in high performance applications. I have a blast in my fwd beaters just as much as the next guy, but I can easily drive my 400 rwhp beast much faster through the corners with no sense of being on the brink where as it gets squirely dealing with FWD's limitations when pushed to the same speeds. AWD is great to have in the snow and such, but I just cant see the need on a daily driver.

When setting out to build THE fastest car I don't believe too many people realisticaly consider a FWD or AWD.
Look at the guys who set landspeed records, top fuel dragsters, GT series; fastest cars in any particular class that allows a mix of drive train combinations is almost allways RWD that wins. Skylines often disable/ remove AWD for certain racing. Yes there are exceptions (Rally being the first to mind) and allways will be. This is for a number of good reasons.

Everything in between "Slow as Hell" and "Stupid Fast" is for people to enjoy. Driver skill is and allways will be a significant factor when pitting different cars against each other.
Personaly I love RWD and FWD the best. I overshot a left turn the other day and simply waited in the middle lane until it was clear. Mash the gas crank the wheel and ease off for a quick 90 degree turn from a stop. I would like to see that from any other drivetrain.

The lack of skill often determines what manufacturers will offer though.
