Question about shifting gears.

for a 2014 CX5, is there a way you can tell what gear the car is in? If im on the highway does it automatically shift to sixth gear?

You can count mentally, or you can flip it into manual mode and check.

If you're not accelerating or climbing a hill, it's probably in 6th almost constantly if you're above 40mph.

Put it to M and the current gear will show.
To continue using automatic mode, switch back to D.

Yes, it will always shift to the highest available/possible gear. It will shift to 5th only when needed (steep hill or heavy acceleration), or when speed drops below about 40. The tachometer will tell you also. Verify it's in 6th gear and see what the rpm is for your cruising speed. For example, 6th gear is right about 2000 rpm at 60mph. 5th would have an obvious increase on the tach...
