I am thinking about getting a S2000 short antenna. Here is my question: Will the short antenna get the same radio reception as the stock antenna?

actually my stubby antenna seems to get better reception than my stock one.....heh...go figure

Jim55, I haven't found one yet. I want to get a shorter antenna but I do like to listen to the radio. So, so far I have gotten mixed opinions. I might just have to buy one and try it for myself.

When it comes to radio reception...size does matter (shady)

I've used the OE, a BMW Z3, a custom 3" handmade german one (off e-bay), and for grins I tried a full size black Miata whip.

Guess which one worked best...yup...the long goofy one.
So in terms of reception ( trying to get a Tucson FM station...45 miles as the crow flies with a mountain range in between) the order is:

Long whip...watch out for branches
OE
BMW Z3
3" custom shorty

If you live in a large town like Planet Houston/Phoenix/LA..it probably doesn't matter, but once you get 25-30 miles out of town, the little guys start losing all but the strongest signal.

Out here in the boonies...I have a dozen FM stations up with the OE, but only 4 with the stubby one.

When I hit the road...the OE goes back on.

I guess I will just stick with the stock antenna. Thanks for all the feedback though.

Although it would look ridiculously long hanging off the back of a 3, a 31" mast will give the best FM reception. The way antennas work is based on length. Specific antenna lengths are suited for optimal reception in a very short frequency range. 31 inches happens to be 1/4 the size of the freqency wavelength of 98 megahertz, which is smack dab in the middle of the FM broadcast band. Antennas based on 1/4 the length of the desired receive frequency are the most popular used because of their very good size/performance ratio. Besides, a full wavelength FM antenna would be a little over 10 foot long, and that would be very impractical on ANY vehicle!
