Not totally sure what you are asking here but I will see if I can answer your question best, I just replaced my headunit in my 2002 Protege 5 and was one of the easiest installs I have yet to complete.
There are 2 ways you can go about removing your current unit:
1-there should be small thin pannels that run the length of the unit that you can just pop off which will expose the small holes where you will insert the Ford removal tool and pull the unit out.
2-This is the method I used as it gave me the best access to everything for routing the wires during the install, you lower and remove your glove box and using a flash light you can see behind the radio there is a wire connected to a white plastice part of the HVAC system. You will squeeze the end to allow you to slide the wire loop off, with that side done you will now move your drivers seat all the way back and look behind the radio on the drivers side for anoth wire loop connection that is just the same as the other discribed and do the same to remove it.Once this has been done you use a flat blade or a plastic trim tool to remove the complete center pannel surounding the radio including the heater controls (this is just clips holding it on) once out you just unplug three connectors and you can put it to the side. With this completed you can just put your hand in behind and push the side clips in on the radio which will release the unit and allow you to remove from the car.
OK so now you should have the radio out and are ready to start the install of your new headunit, now this is where you want to have the right stuff before starting. You want to get a wire harness adapter and the single or double din mounting plate depending on the application you are doing. You will take your time and connect your harness adaptor to your new headunits harness and solder the connection and heatshrink the joints, then you mount your new headunits mounting tray into the dash kit and insert into the area you removed the OEM radio from. Oh and sorry once you have removed the OEM radio you can then reinstall the dash center cover and reconnect the wires you took from th HVAC system. So you will now be back together with your dash kit mounted and harness ready to be connected.
Take your harness adapter and connect it to the harness in the car, then bring your new unit and plug in the antenna and harness connector and slid it to position. turn on and enjoy.
Hope this helps.
