Putting a Speed6 on a Diet

I just don't see the point in launching this car unless you're at a drag strip.

If you want the seat of the pants power, go with the go-fast mods. If you're even considering the rear sway, you really should do it with the diff mount, if you're really set in your way. The amount of disassembly to get there is so large that you'll save yourself easily 4-5 hours by doing them both together.

I think their is a how-to for the rear diff or sway bar...

I have never "launched" the car, meaning I've never dumped the clutch. It's always a feather for me, and I still get some really good launches.

One person you might want to talk to is 2NR over on Street Unit... he modified his ms6 a bit and it was pretty quick. I think he made it into the 12s.

Nah, I'm not looking for 12s. I'm looking for about 290-300 to the wheels. THis will be my DD for the next few years, so I don't want to destroy it. :)

Even if you are not he can inform you of the weak links in this car... one was the axels. I think he snapped 4 total. He was also looking at getting beefier axels made at one time and point. I do not know if it got any further then that.

Edit: He no longer has the ms6. I think he traded it in for a evo ircc.

I knew about the diff mount problems, but I always thought the axle problems were a result of the diff mount breaking. Guess not.

Ugh.

(dunno)Well what do you expect when you lauch a car at that high of rpms? The car wasn't designed for that in mind that im aware of.

So are these breakages (axles and diff mounts) always due to launching? I read somewhere that there were cases where they broke without launches?

If that's the case, that they're all related to hard launches, then I don't feel so bad. But it still seems like it was under-engineered. Mazda should have know that an AWD sport sedan would get launched.

From what I understand generally speaking yes but keep in mind i dont have a ms6 so i dont surf that section much.

Still, slipping the clutch brings its own set of problems, mostly caused by heat eating the life of the clutch more quickly.

Better go back to driving like my grandfather. :)

I don't think I saw anyone mention a lightweight clutch/flywheel combo, or the balance shaft delete kit.

Just as a testimonial, I dropped over 29 pounds of unsprung weight by going with a much lighter wheel. Keep in mind that you could also go to a 17" wheel and a thinner tire to save weight.

yes sir..i will be doing my B/S Delete this week sometime..that thing is huge!!! ive seen pics of it and i never though it would be so big.. and lighter wheels FTW..less rotational mass.. helps the drivetrain.

17-inch wheel, sure. THinner tire? Not on these streets. Potholes appear every day around here. I've thought about a 17-inch rim and THICKER tires for winter use, since the sidewall would fit. We freeze-unfreeze-refreeze so much in the winter it wreaks havoc on the asphalt.

Hahahaha. Well, since buying the MS6, I'm down from 200 lbs to 178. DOes that count?

thats pretty solid. guess i should get rid of a few pounds in my car, being me and the 52lb sub and 10lb box that i put in my trunk today...

Yeah, I'm working on the diet part right now too. I'm trying to get 20 down before the holidays, so that can't hurt the gas mileage/performance at all.
