Thinking of one or the other soon. I've been out of the loop since SNES, so I need some help. Which one has the advantage in each area?
Reliability:
Games:
Ease of controls:
Price of system/games:
Input from anyone who owns or plays both regularly would be especially helpful.

reliablity: tie
games: ps2
ease of controls: subjective
price of system/games: tie

you should get a PS2 first unless you're drawn to xbox titles or have an HDTV and surround sound setup to utilize

Reliability: XBox. Disc Read Errors are still common on PS2s.
Games: PS2
Ease of controls: PS2 - and for me this is the deciding factor
Price of system/games: tie

I own both and basically play my PS2 90% of the time because the controller is far superior to anything else available right now.

xbox, if you like divx and emulation, i'll get a ps2 once i find a good price on a used one.
bought my xbox for $300 though just for divx and emulation

The controller itself is why I have yet to invest in an Xbox...I absolutely hate that round controller. And whoever commented about the disc read errors, I have an older PS2 and I never have disc read errors.

I think a lot of the people didn't like the xbox controler b/c they were used to the ps2 controler first since it came out first. In terms of graphics in game and load times xbox is by far better. A lot of game makers dropped their contracts with ps2 and instead went to microsoft b/c they didn't have to limit themselves and make two versions of games, they could have their full vision for the game realized on the more advanced platform of the xbox. PS2 games have a lower pixel rate and often have to have less......for example a game for the xbox will have a more expansive enviornment, more cars, etc. I was a hard core ps2 advocate until I saw the same games I was playing on my ps2 on my friends xbox.........the difference is outstanding. I got an xbox that same summer and have been more then happy. Especially if you get into modding them, you can have some real fun. I actually modded my xbox to play ps2 games so i have the best of both worlds (rockon) . It also depends on your genre of game......PS2 does more rpg type games and cartoony type games like Spyro or Rachet and Clank, or the Kingdom Hearts series, while xbox does more fps and racing games. If you pay attention and go onto a site like ign.com you can see that many of the new games are for the xbox exclusivlely and not for both the ps2 and xbox. I see sony releasing a thin version of the ps2 as a cheap gimic to try and make up for the lack of new quality games coming out for their system, with the exception of GT4 of course. Xbox has exclusive console rights to games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 because they can handle the games, PS2 just doesn't have what it takes internally to do justice to those games. Look at ign.com under release dates and see what's comig out for both platforms and whether or not it's exclusive to those platforms. If it's for both the xbox and ps2 they aren't the same game, it will always look and play better on the xbox. Then again, if you're into skinny thing then a ps2 might be just what the doctor ordered (hippy) *end rant* system comparison

physically the X-box unit is superior in every way.

the was PS2 makes up the difference is with games, because there are more available, and the controller is the best ever created. its beaten out everything in every comparison ever....

but honestly, I'd take a PC with a playstation like controller for any game that happens to be available on PC and either game system.

i love the original xbox controller. but i have very large monkey hands so i guess thats why. but its gay that microsoft no longer makes the original. thats bulls***, i loved them :(

Xbox ownz in multiplayer and graffics. PS2 is awsome for games, but XboX is getting better and better.

I have all three, and I stay on Xbox alot. I mostly use my PS2 for a DVD player.

Whaaaat? Dexter you be so craazy. I love the Type S controllers man. The old ones were too big. I like the type-s xbox controllers more than the PS2's, and waaaaay more than that fruity crap on gamecube.

I was originally leaning towards the PS2, but XBOX is looking better. ESP if it can be modded to play PS2 games. If I were to do that, what would I need?

I myself like each in their own respective way, the PS2 controller does fit a bit better in your hand, but the upper controls(L1, L2, R1, R2) can get confusing, where as the X-box controller isn't as small in ur hands, it fits there nicely, and I have smaller hands, and it's also a bit more siplistic, no hidden controls except the triggers, which allow for the sensitivity(works great for the throttle/brake function in most racing games, speed of walking, speed of rounds being squeezed off etc), there are only a few things I desire about the ps2, thats a few of the exclusive sony games, and the ability to use the DVD function without a playback kit, and being able to read burnt CD's, but the x-box can be modded for that, and once you do that, you can get all those desireable things about the PS2 for it. Overall, if you have a moderatly good TV(something colour..thats about the only requirements really..well, a clear picture I suppose) and you will notice the X-box is much better(mostly), and you will be able to fully enjoy it. I hook mine up with the video in its port, and then have the sound hooked into my really loud stereo, with some auxilary surround speakers...it sounds better then life sometimes I'm telling ya man..nothing like feeling like you are insided the Enzo ferrari, as your house rumbles, and the sweat pours down your face, and you go 200mph on the Nureburgen(I just butchered that spelling) track....ahh, to be a video game freak again..I don't play too often, usually only with friends(in person), and mostly when I'm drinking. But yeah, X-box is by far the better console over all, unless yo have hands the size of a 2 year old girl..and even then it can be worked with..but the new model controllers do kinda suck, but you can pick up the old school ones used(really cheap), and they are better.

PS2 is better all the way.

I remember when the PlayStation was an original idea of Nintendo, being Sony the hardware developers.

yea, whatev, i dont like the S at all...i just wish they made BOTH. but they are gay and i cant find regulars anywhere. I figure i should stockpile. ive already got one with a mangled cable...fixed with electrical tape, but its gona break for good eventually...

(blah)

Go to a used game store and try and find them while they're still here......although in Tally all the controlers are gone b/c of Halo 2. There's a ton of different ways to mod your xbox since it has a built in hard drive.......go to xbox-scene.com and you can read up on what's possible. I'd tell you how mine was done but I live in a college town so I just posted on a local forum and got a couple guys to do mine for 20 bucks (first) .

my box is modded, but i was unaware that ps2 games were playable.

i mess around on X-S sometimes, and i found this:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=315377&b=1&st=&p=&#entry

says in there that a ps2 emulator isn't really feasible. how did you do yours? or, better yet, how did the guys around you do it? any way to get in contact with these guys?

XBOX is gooda.

I like both, used to hate the S until I really started using it. I think it's better than the regualr one except for the joysticks. What's stupid though is M$ said they'd continue to make the regular one alongside the japanese design for western markets but they didn't follow through.
