Protege vs 3

I had a 03 p5, and now an 06 pzev mazda 3 hatch. So far the only thing that really stood out on the p5 over the 3 is the fact that its a cable vs a ETB. I really dislike that about my 3. I made posts about my 3 not seeming any faster than my old p5 when I first got it. It really didnt seem much quicker. With that bein said......

I raced my friends p5. He has IHE,and I just have intake and exhaust, and a heavy ass system. From a stop was the closest. From rolls my car won hands down.

I have stock RSA's on the 3, and had Fuzion Zri's on the p5. Both have\had stock suspension and the same box\sub in the hatch. I do alotof canyon driving through the Ortega highway, and the 3 seems to plant its ass end better through some of the turns. max on most of the turns for the p5 was 60, where the 3 can do just under 65. Not a huge jump, but it also feels like I could go faster, and the p5 was at its limits. By no means is this scientific but for me the 3 handles better.

Interior I like the 3 much better. Both have similar road noise, and both have their squeeks that drive me crazy. The p5 had a wider hatch though, which was nice. Bodyboards fit across the back (42.5") without my box being back there. They dont fit across the back of the 3.

Gas mileage seems to be the same for me as well. Consistantly 28mpg with like 3\4 freeway driving

I happen to like the look of the 3 more than the p5. The front end of the p5 looks tiny compared to the 3's, which makes the 3 look more muscular.... I also like the headlight\tail light assemblies of the 3 much better. Oh and the 3's stick sits much lower stock than the p5's. After having a twm ss on the
p5 I had no trouble switching to the 3's stick. I couldnt stand the truck feel of the stock p5 stick, plus punching the lids of cups got real annoying as well.

Gooday and enjoy both cars. Both are rediculously fun to drive. (first)

And who races a 1/8 mile track, anyway? Everybody knows the 3 is slow off the line. Take it to a real track and see what transpires.

You need to grow up J.A. and Look at the Light above the track indicating I won (And Had about 3 car lenths at the 1/8 line, he would of done s*** in the 1/4, so whoop te do. I ran a 10:16 on that run. If the angle of the light looks off Compare it with the 2 other races where its clear, anybody with half a brain could figure this out. (shocked)

And if your Still doubting, I can send you or ANYBODY the higher res original clip, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! (ughdance) (ughdance)

And Nuf people race both 1/4 & 1/8. 1/8 Comes to be much more of a Drivers race with a neer stock Protege and similer cars. (drive2)

I would LOVE to race you!!!! (first) I got More power now. Headers, Nology wires, and Denso Iridium Plugs should be at least 10whp more then when I ate that 3 & That was one of 3 Mazda3's I ate that day (2 hatches and a Sedan, all with the 2.3L Engine). I have to say I was a bit full at the end of that night, but I got no problem adding you to the plate (poke) at anytime.

I'll put My 2.0L 3 up against you 2.0L any day of the week on any track and beat you. while we are at it we can go to Willow Springs and do some track racing.... we will see how well your protege does in corners like my 3 can......oh and 1/8 mile is for fags...espescially since ALL 4 cyl make their power at HIGH RPMS you will never really know what its like to win a REAL race til you do run a 1/4 mile.
 
Head to head I beat the s*** outta my friends p5. congrats on beatin some 3s. lotta factors to add into any race.

Buying for looks? I'd say the P5/MSP/MP3 wins.
Buying for straight line performance? I'd say the 3 2.3L wins because of its potential.
Buying for twisties performance? I'd say it would be a tie between the 3-2.3 and MSP. I still think its a tie if you start adding aftermarket gear as long as you are talking the same budget for both.
Buying for autox performance? MSP no contest.
Buying for joy riding experience? I'd say all the Proteges win here but obviously both are fun to drive.
Buying for all the above? Hold off a few months and get a MS3!

Wow, so much infighting... I'll have to admit I love the interior styling of the 3. Back last year when I was looking to getting my P5 my dad suggested that I look at some 3's because they're newer and have larger engines. I figured I give it a go because hey, it's a Mazda so it should be pretty good. Well I will admit that after looking at a P5 the 3 Hatch looked kind of "dumpy." It seemed too large for it's own good whereas the P5 had a decent aggressive stance stock. One thing I really didn't like about the 3 was that the front seemed to almost come to a point and it just didn't have that sporty look from the factory. Now the interior is a different story. I always liked the P5's interiors - they're simple and clean and don't look cheap. The 3's interior is just amazing though - from the gauges to the console to even the shifter, everything felt very "European-sports-car-esque" to me. Needless to say it was a tough decision to make but I liked the looks of the P5 better and hey, it was cheaper (first) . My sister is looking into getting a 3 sedan though (which I liked better than the hatch) so I might just be tempted to "try" one out...

Since we cant race Live, we can compare slips. I istalled the headers & should have the mounts in next week, and as long as it doesnt rain Ill have some time slips & A vid for confirmation (With footage of the time board) for you. You get some time slips and Vid confirmation & lets Virtual Race.

haha ok sounds good i am installing my header today and well in order for it to be a race you need to run a 1/4 mile because we dont have 1/8 tracks here...but our slips do show 1/8mile times...also dont forget to do the conversion ratio to figure out what your "real" tim would be at sea level.

Um yeah!!! Hopefully you read my whole post, because I explain I race both the 1/4 & The 1/8.

Ohh and we are pretty much at sea level.

I should have the mounts in and if all weather is good we have a race!!!

Ohh and another thing, better run a Low 14 or just tuck your tail between your legs!!! I already hit a 10:16 in the 8th before the headers, & they do wonders for my top end Being 4-1 and all!


I also know what wins races, you will see that first hand, I refer to you bitching about the 1/8 mile track & why the 3 2.3L was loosing (But I geuss you couldnt figure that out)

& Manual cars Ive beaten are Proteges, Integra LS's, MX-3 V6's, Neon R/T's, Cavi Z22, Z24, Sunfires Z22, z24, Mazda3 2.3L, Civic SiR (Si), Focus ZX5, ZX4, All kinds of Civics with LS Teg motors and so on & so on & so on.

all i hear is internet s*** talking because im sorry but with a protege 2.0L NON turbo 4 cyl with CAI wires header and exhaust is not going to beat 200hp cars unless they have 100K+miles and have an old lady driving them.....so make sure you dont miss a gear trying to catch up with me...

Im sory, but 16's arnt gouing to Cut it Chump, thats what your going to run, even 15's wont do!

I mean COME ON!!!! For crying out loud the Stock MANUAL Mazda3 2.0L Does a 1/4 in 16:71

Even with your Mods you would probably get spanked By the manual with your automatic.

So You will BEST in the high 15's to low 16's I Bet, and thats Just NOT enough!!!
