I had a 03 p5, and now an 06 pzev mazda 3 hatch. So far the only thing that really stood out on the p5 over the 3 is the fact that its a cable vs a ETB. I really dislike that about my 3. I made posts about my 3 not seeming any faster than my old p5 when I first got it. It really didnt seem much quicker. With that bein said......
I raced my friends p5. He has IHE,and I just have intake and exhaust, and a heavy ass system. From a stop was the closest. From rolls my car won hands down.
I have stock RSA's on the 3, and had Fuzion Zri's on the p5. Both have\had stock suspension and the same box\sub in the hatch. I do alotof canyon driving through the Ortega highway, and the 3 seems to plant its ass end better through some of the turns. max on most of the turns for the p5 was 60, where the 3 can do just under 65. Not a huge jump, but it also feels like I could go faster, and the p5 was at its limits. By no means is this scientific but for me the 3 handles better.
Interior I like the 3 much better. Both have similar road noise, and both have their squeeks that drive me crazy. The p5 had a wider hatch though, which was nice. Bodyboards fit across the back (42.5") without my box being back there. They dont fit across the back of the 3.
Gas mileage seems to be the same for me as well. Consistantly 28mpg with like 3\4 freeway driving
I happen to like the look of the 3 more than the p5. The front end of the p5 looks tiny compared to the 3's, which makes the 3 look more muscular.... I also like the headlight\tail light assemblies of the 3 much better. Oh and the 3's stick sits much lower stock than the p5's. After having a twm ss on the
p5 I had no trouble switching to the 3's stick. I couldnt stand the truck feel of the stock p5 stick, plus punching the lids of cups got real annoying as well.
Gooday and enjoy both cars. Both are rediculously fun to drive. (first)
