What exactlly is the recall all about. I talked to a Mazda mechanic and they told me something about a butterfly nut on the inside of the intake manifold coming lose??

1) First, does anyone know anything about this?

2) Second, is it a difficult fix for myself or should I bring it in to Mazda?

3) Finally, what are the causes and effects?

if theres a mandatory recall, mazda should take care of it free of charge, if so, def do it

I haven't heard anything. But I'm a 2003 with 90K miles so if I haven't had a problem yet I probably never will. I'd take it in though if they notify me. Anyone actually see any info on this?

boy you guys are later to the table! this was announced a while ago, do a search for details

I just got the recall dealiebob in the mail a week ago. What's up w/ it? Got any info?

Ah the good ole VICS screws. I fixed it myself. Should have seen the salesladys face when I walked in with my intake mani in my hand 4 months after I bought the car.

haha... are they gonna do this with my mods on the car?

and since i bought used, good ole mazda probably didnt send me the letter... never got one!

hahaha... whhopsies! only on 2003's...

just called my mazda dealer, bob sight mazda, read him my VIN number and he told me that my car was not part of the recall...

then he started acting like he was my best friend "why dont you uh.... come by sometime... i'll give u a free oil change and we can look around at that car of urs... my names loyd just give me a call"

poor lonely mechanics.... hahaha

too abd i just changed my own oil about 1,000 miles ago... damn!

what mods you have?

in my signature...

intake, headers, msp axelback, various other little things...

p5 strut bar... thats all i can think of on the engine or in the engine bay...

its not that hard to fix yourself, either. the hardest part was getting to those 2 bottom bolts on the intake manifold. i pulled my IM off about a month ago and just pulled the whole vtcs system out and capped the end off with a bolt. its pretty straight forward. theres a writeup in the howto section by flat_black.

I went ahead and brought it in this morning. They told me that it really has only happened to like 1 or 2 2003 Proteges?? Well anyways problem solved. Good luck to the rest of you.

I know 3 people that its happend to. So thats a lie.
I am sure it was. One of those hush, hush things. I also had a couple people tell me about the same thing.

It's way more than 1 or 2. Do some searching, there are many threads that get into it. If your VIN doesn't fall within the recall it doesn't exactly mean that you are safe either. Mine was not in the recall range and it happened to me. I know of a few others that were not in the recall either and they had it happen as well. If you still got warranty then you are cool, but if not you will most likely be screwed by Mazda if it happens to you outside of the recall.

There are two stickied threads about this problem in the 3rd gen section.
You will see that it has happened to several of us.
The dealer did not hassle me about my mods.

Same here. I brought my 2003 protege es in today w/ basic mods and the dealer gave me no problems at all.

The fix made a difference too. No more rattle. I think my manifold was loose or the bolts were banging around inside there because since the dealer fixed it there has been no rattle.

anywho... did find that my sway bar endlink is about to fall apart... casuing this annoying clunk... 197 if i have them fix it... damn

YOUCH!!!

Order up some from AWR. For $225 I would just buy the 21.5 mm AWR bar and adj. end links.
