Project RX7 Race car - Progress so far!

Good luck on your project! In the 90s, I built and raced an 87 RX7 in the SCCA's Improved Touring S Class. It was a great car, lots of fun and super reliable. Links to some pics of it are here:

I love to see these out on the track!

Picking up the paint that we had mixed in about a 1/2 hour, then going to get the new car trailer at 12:00.

I'll try to get some pics of it going for paint, and I hope our decal guy gets done making them soon. :)

Also, the mounting bracket they sent for the seat was wrong, so we need to send it back and get the right one (they sent a slider, but those are for street use only, not track use -- only single lock, so we need the fixed mount bracket).

We got the exhaust all cleaned up last night, polished the tips, and painted the mufflers with high heat flat black. It looks pretty badass.

We've hit a snag.

The paint guy was supposed to call on Saturday and paint the car on the weekend, so we prepped it, bought the new trailer to tow it there, got the paint and all those supplies and he didn't call at all. And then yesterday, didn't return my calls, so I'm sort of at a standstill until he gets back to me.

So the only thing I can really do is re-route the tubing for the fire system tonight. I have a friend coming over tonight to help with that. Last night I went out to see another friend who sold me some Dzus and Camloc fasteners to put the splitter on with after it's painted. It should look really good, and be able to come off easy when we wanna take it off.

Here's hoping the paint guy calls today though. (nailbyt)

sounds like it's time for a new paint guy. No need to encourage bad service...

better bad service than a bad job.

I'd pay + take canings with bamboo if that meant I would get a damn nice paint job in the end.

or go somewhere w/ decent service that does a good job. I like that alternative better...

Sometimes it isn't possible to find such a place. If I was back home, sure.. but rochester, no dice at all.

why do I think that halifax is also not large enough of a city to have decent body shops...

Oh there are awesome body shops here. We actually have a population of almost 400,000 people in the municipality.

This guy is one of our "sponsors" though, and he was spraying it in exchange for placing decals on the car. So we did the prep and bought the materials, and he was supposed to actually spray it, and use the paint booth at their shop to do it, and they're a large body shop.

Anyway, I guess you get what you pay for.

Oh and he was going to provide all the decals for the car, all the ones I designed, and everything at no cost.

Rochester has a million people in the municipality and man.. not a single decent paint shop around. It's a requirement to know someone to get a decent job.

It's probably also because Rochester isn't exactly an affluent area at all...

can't wait to see your FC painted :)

Congrats on the FC Timmy! I've been away too long. :) The color we're using isn't the stock RX7 white, it's a brighter white, but still white. Should look good with bronze Volks.

And Lisa, no calls yet. Just called my friend's dad who has a small body shop outside of the city and he said he'd spray it for me for nothing. Then I called a friend of mine who has a sign guy he uses, and he may be able to wrangle me up a sponsorship with that guy.

So car is getting painted within a week at my friend's Dad's shop. And last night, my friend Matt came over and helped me re-route the fire system lines, and put a "tee" in one of the lines to add a third one (he works in the A/C industry, so he works with lines and flaring them all day long). Tonight he's coming over to help with padding the roll cage.

Updated photos...

From the night we put it in the paint booth:

Oh, and I installed the wing yesterday.

This wing is a stock mazda part that came as part of a trim package. Interestingly enough, it's the only FUNCTIONAL wing they ever made, dropping the co-efficient of drag by 0.03. Should look nice when the splitter goes on (it's also black).

Updated photos:

Just about everything is done to the car now. Only things left are to install the splitter and the new fuel pump, but for now the car runs. :) Oh and the new gauge package is coming soon!

Also, check out the pic with the fire system lines, those got re-routed. :)

Fresh KYB AGX shocks/struts, Eibach Springs, Ground Control Coilover sleeves
Dual HKS exhaust
Momo Detachable steering wheel

New OMP 6-point camlock harness
Cleaned up the distributor to fix a spark problem

Removed power steering pump assembly
Mallory 6al ignition box
Fresh paint and decals
Sunpro Super Tach II
Duck bill spoiler from "Sport" package
Cleaned and adjusted Weber carb, changed some jetting
New plug wires
Royal Purple tranny and diff fluid
Replaced anti-freeze with distilled water and water wetter
New Holley fuel regulator
New braided line with AN fittings from regulator to carb
Re-routed fire system to add 2 nozzles and run along the transmission tunnel

Added a Choke Cable

I'm probably forgetting some stuff.

Now going to put in:

And we're now running proper race fuel! Yippeeeeee!!!
