Project Black has Begun! - Colorado

^ That's a crazy idea. Maybe if you did 1.5" or 2" pipe with two separate, smaller filters and they "y'd" into a 3"...

I bought the K&N filter for my SRI today since I don't want the FleaBay special to decintigrate into my throttle body! LOL! Also, at Advance Auto Parts, they have plenty of 3" pipe peices with different bends and angles for me to create a CAI maybe for summer time or something...

Also, I am getting a quote for some body work and touch up paint to get my girl shining again.

This is the one I got, but they do have other color options. I liked the red connections, and I'm painting the tubing black. I also do not trust the filter, so that's getting thrown in the garbage. I spent $50 on a real K&N to put on the end.

no i know what intake you got (im getting the same one if it works remember)

i was asking about the filter itself.. the K&N filter

This is probably going to sound retarded..but what If: you have both? Lol.

Imagine a CAI with an added sri, so basically a y pipe.. one going into wheelwell (cai) and the other end of the Y is a filter..which ends in engine bay (sro) would this cause TOO much air intake?

Just a thought I had for a while now.. haha
Both of these are true. The only thing like this is an AEM bypass valve that only opens when the primary filter is submergered

Oh...my bad! (breakn) This is similar to what I got. However, I got mine at Advance Auto Parts. I paid about $10 more than this one, but it's the same thing and I didn't have to wait for it. Really, almost any filter with the 3" opening for the pipe should work. It is definitely not Protege specific.

If you are going SRI I would suggest the AEM Driflow filter. You never have to oil it and since it's in the engine bay the whole time, no real worry about it getting dirty quickly.

Good advice Vamp! Unfortunately, a little too late. Advance had an AEM Driflow, but I have never used an AEM filter, so I defaulted to the K&N. It'll have to work, and with the moisture here in Colorado during the winter, hopefully, the oil on the filter will help deflect small amounts of water if necessary.

You will be fine. I've run both filters, the AEM when they first came out and the only thing that I liked about th AEM over the K&N was the interval between cleanings. I still love K&N but will only run in CAI setups. You will love the filter either way you go.

Ohh i see. I must say, i have never seen/heard of that before!

But that would do what i imagined i guess. But how well do those help? If they help at all.
Here's: a pic for reference if anyone else didn't know about it.

...or run some ducting from the bumper to the filter of the SRI and enclose the filter in a box...much like the stock setup, with better flow.

I had one on my 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS and lets just say this... when they came out the owner of the company put one on his NSX and completely submerged the filter in a bucket of water (and I do mean completely) and the bypass did it's job. It works on basic principles of suction:

When there is a great enough pressure in the piping, the rubber flaps open to allow air to pass through there instead of the filter. Once pressure drops, the flaps close and go back to regular operation of the intake.

Here is a link to the test (can't seem to find a video, but here is an article about it): http://www.modified.com/tech/0104scc_aem_air_bypass_valve/index.html

Well, I received the Ebay special intake yesterday. Suprisingly, the filter is constructed very well. I really didn't expect that. The construction is almost exactly like a K&N, but this filter has a small cone filter that recedes in the end whereas the K&N does not. It just has the black plastic over the whole top. I may actually end up taking my K&N back to the store...

Currently painting the tubing. Prolly install next week.

I too have the same intake and used the filter that came with it... after a while I will just switch it out for the AEM... but for now, the filter that we have you can clean/treat just like a K&N

Installed the SRI, and took a quick test drive. Definite gain, and a nice deep sound with a faint whistle now and again. Only annoying thing is that the purge solenoid valve has an obvious clicking sound because it is no longer encased in the rubber brace that is removed with the stock intake system. Currently finding a work around. I'm sure someone on here has a work around...Vamp?

Lol, I just let mine hang, there really is no where to mount it anymore. I pretty much just left mine to hang/lay in the vast open pit left behind and am just waiting for it to go wrong to find a better fix, but for now I have had no issues

You can kind of see it in this pic that I took yesterday of the engine bay, there is no mount made, everything just kind of laying there where it would've been had the stock intake was still there:

Nice. I just needed to reposition mine. First, I tried to zip tie it to the sway bar, but that put it too close to the ventalation system, and that did not absorb or supress any of the clicking. It is all good now because I cut the original mount out of the stock intake system, and wedged it in between a couple things. It is no longer clicking. I'm loving the new sound and the little extra power I'm getting. SRI works well in Colorado!
