Problems with iPod

too big for my taste. i try to keep everything out of my car. plus i have the new 30gig which is so small. adding this thing would just be overkill on biggy sizing.

That's what I was thinking too, it's pretty big. Yeah, I like everything to look as clean sleek as possible.

Belkin came out with black accessories which is better than that white they had before. I might get the cup holder suction deal they have and car charger.

I have the older Protge style cup holder that I switched to in my car (with the lid) so I'll mess around with what works the best between the two.

How does the aux adapter work? How does it hook up to the IPOD?

I have my iPod hooked up this way into my Pioneer head unit. What I did was have the cord run down behind the head unit, right to where the passenger footwell is, and connected the other cord from there to my iPod which usually sits in my cupholder. I also have the cord tucked under the center console until the passenger seat, and on the floor when im not so its hidden when not in use. All you have to do is reach down for the cord and pull it up.

If you set it up like this you can navigate your music using your ipod (which is the way I wanted it).

This one doesn't have the fm modulation and they all come in silver, black or white. I think I'll get it.

ok........im just a guy that likes to keep everything clean. i dont like anything sticking out or look like it had been added onto the inside of the car. i want everything to be clean. i have a simple cable that comes out from under the ash tray that you cant even see. i just plug my ipod up to it and thats it. dont want anything bigger than the ipod itself. whats bigger? an rca jack or that device?

geez.....thats too fat. you see, i think all the old ipods are too big. and thats with an old ipod so thats WAY too big.

I see what you're saying. I was just offering up a way to mount the ipod as well as keep it charged in what I consider to be a relatively sleeker package than having two sets of wires, power & audio coming from the ipod itself. To each his/her own though.

I didn't realize that wasn't a 5G.

I have my rca adaptor going into the glovebox directly from the HU so keeping it in the glove box is always an option too.

So after a little research I came up with this.... The Kenwood iPod interface (IP500) allows you control the pod THROUGH the deck and charges the pod while it's connected.

I was also told a generic aux. cable will not allow you to control through the deck, you'll still need to use the pod for control. Not to mention it doesn't charge.

If that is the case the extra money for the Kenwood piece would by all means be worth it to me.

you see... i had that piece orionally and i thought it totally sucked. You won't be able to see the songs on the play list, not even through the ipod. I returned it days after i installed it.

That's the point of it though, to control the pod through the deck. You can't see the songs, but you see the playlist name?

So how do you control if you have no vision? I'm assuming that's your point. Haha

What the crap? That seems pretty stupid. Are you sure everything was working properly? That doesn't sound very Kenwood, or $100 supplemental interface device.

yeah i was going to get this for x-mas because i liked the option of the charge and it would display the filename but is tis not the case?? if it dosent allow any control how do you navigate to a playlist? put it on the playlist and then hook it up? or are you just forced to shuffel all the songs on your i-pod? It seems asthough that that is mostly useless then. and with the aux you will have full control just no display and no charge but that might be the better option here.

You will have NO navigational control on the ipod itself. You will be able to switch songs through the head unit, BUT you will not be able to see the playlists. Instead of playlist names you will see numbers.

FYI ... the Kenwood unit is fine. Not as easy to navigate as using the iPod directly, but much easier and safer to navigate using the head unit. I bought this and installed it about two weeks ago and I think it's great. I have $100 bucks in it and run the cable cleanly into the glovebox so you see NO wires. You could replace it with a car charger ($25) and an adapter ($25) and still have to control the iPod directly on the unit.

Navigation...
Forward and backward buttons skip through the songs
AM/FM buttons toggle through the each folder
Scan button (same as button #1 I think) will change what the AM/FM buttons toggle through (playlist, artists, songs, etc.)

As far as display, you can only display two lines limited by the display itself and not the unit. You can have it display both artist and track title - but then you cannot see the clock. I like to know what time it is, so I display track title and clock. Unfortunately, it does not display the graphic EQ, which really ticks me off, but what can you do. Aside from the EQ issue, I think the KCA-IP500 is great!

Ok guys, I just got a black nano for chirstmas. I already bought a Monster cable to hook it up to my Head Unit...I just want to make sure that I actually can hook my IPod into the stock reciever. I can, right? Shouldn't there be RCA jacks on the back? Also, I tried taking the reciever out the other day and just got frustrated when I couldn't get it out. Can anyone give me a procedure to take it out, or send me a link that tells me how?

Thanks

You can connect your iPod to the stock unit; however, it does not have RCA jacks on the back. There is a Kenwood-specific 13-pin connector and you can buy a cable which will convert that to stereo RCA inputs (they run ~$25, I bought mine from Crutchfields, but don't use it anymore).

As far as removing the head unit, rotate the two center vents down so you can grab the plastic trim piece and pull it off. It'll pop right off. Disconnect the hazard wire harness and that piece is free at the top. You'll need to disconnect the temp. and air select cables and then the trim panel is free enough to get it out of your way - there is a nice write-up with pictures of the cable removal here ...

Then, if you don't have removal tools, use two butter knives. Shove them in the left and right sides of the radio where there is a slot and you should feel some resistance as they slide in. This disengages the clips. Then, grab the frame around the radio. The removal tools may include a hook that you can use - if you go to Best Buy, they have them. If you don't, use needle-nose pliers and grip at the bottom and tug it right out. It is a major pain to get the connector in the back on the radio without removing the entire head unit, but it is possible. Just slide the unit out as far as you can without too much tension on the wires and snake that connector into the back.
