Problem : Wipers and snow

Hi all,

I got my CX-5 about a month and a half ago. Ever since, every single time I use the front wipers with light snow (or more), I have to spray juice because it only creates a thin layer of white dust-like film on the windshield. Could it be that the wipers arms are not tight enough?

Seriously, it could only be that? I never had any washing fluid capable of s*cking this much before. Currently using first batch provided by Mazda.

It might not be that, but it is what I would check first. I use the -45C RainX stuff, plenty of good and cheap alternatives.

Are you using your front windshield defroster? If not, there is not enough "wet" on the windshield for the wipers to their job.

I am using it with "legs" too since my windshield defrost button doesn't stay in place (have to go to dealer for that). I usually wait for the bottom to be entirely made of water drops.

I have had wiper issues as well. Even with the defroster on full blast for some time I still get ice/frost build up on the upper windshield and around the wipers. I have read of similar concerns on other forums particularly complaining about the lack of sufficient hot air blowing out of the upper windshield air vents. In addition I don't think the original wipers are suitable for our more severe Canadian winters. I think I'll switch to dedicated winter wipers next winter. Mazda should also do as Subaru has done and add a ice melting wire along the lower windshield to keep the wipers clear particularly when shut off.

The wipers indeed don't have a tremendous amount of grip I'm sure a heavier duty blade would sit and wipe better.

So far though, I've found that the fluid squirters aren't that wide or powerful. For the CX-5, apply long and liberally. My 2012 Terrain's washers would douse the whole window and wipe once hard with a touch of the lever. I do miss that, so this will take some getting used to.
