I was driving down the rt.89 today when i hear a whinning/screaming sound. It stopped after 30 secs then i smelt it. Soon after steering got tough at slow speeds. I pop the hood, and when i try and turn the wheel fluid flys out from the bearing:( I have nowhere to work on my car, and need it fixed ASAP. Im gonna call mazda tomorrow for prices of the pump and also what they want to install it. It looks real simlple to swap, but i think i need a new belt also b/c the fluid sprayed all over it. The dealership is only 10 mins away so hopefully I can get this fixed without to much hassle and without getting ***** from the dealer.

Also my turbo kit removes my powersteering loop, im not sure if it is the cause, but definitly something to think about.

My car is off warrenty, so no chance at a free replacement.(headshake

bump..

anyone know cost of a new pump?
anyone have the dealer replace on before?

what kind of cost should i be expecting?

get one used for under $100, otherwise, it could be really expensive from what i see on car-part.com.... I see $200 here for a USED one...

478$ for the part, and a week to get it.
The first available date for them to work on the car is the 2nd week of november.

im ******... WTF

How hard is it to change the pump? anyone?? with labor it will probally be close to 1k$ this sucks.

get one from a junk yard- car-part.com is your friend. It cant be TOO hard. otherwise just remove powersteering altogether... MP5jeff removed his i think he threw his pump away, im not 100% though

Makes me glad i didnt cut off my powersteering loop :D

i might just remove the powersteering.. seems like a nice option, plus i was gonna put the car away for winter soon.

Im gonna price out a used pump, although i really dont want a used one, but at almost 500$ i have no choice.

hey paulmp3 how many liters is ur engine?? cuz u might luck out i got a brand new steering pump upstairs in my room it was for my sis 2000 protege but she got into a bad accident with a Jeep her whole front of the car got ****** up so it might take a while to fix but i think that the 1.8 n 2.0L shoundnt be different in pump size but ill check it n if u need it message me or somethin n we can work out a deal im n im from richmond va so i dont no how much it is to ship but that thing is pretty heavy, its also from the Mazda Dealership (OEM I think)

Thanks for the help and offers from everyone.. i really appreciate it.

i found one 10mins from my place for 85$, i ran down and bought it asap. It only has 35,000 miles also.

Hey Paul, sucks to hear about your bad luck. Just as an fyi for your new one, I highly recommend this stuff for your ps fluid. My dealership had a "full circle service day" and they had guys from this place there doing demos and showing their stuff. they gave me a free fluid replacement and told me how the stuff really helps the columns last longer. I noticed a great difference in the steering too. very smooth. After seeing what some good transmission fluid did for a bunch of us (redline) I was happy to check this stuff out too. Free also helped :) http://www.bgprod.com/

the service day was really cool to btw...free goodies galore..mazda speed hat, calculator, beer cozy, pizza, donuts (mmmm donuts) and drinks. Got to take a MSMiata out for a spin (not too impressed)

Good luck!

I just got it replaced this afternoon, i had the place i bought the used part install it, only cost 83$.

Scott thanks for the info, i will have to give it a try eventually. I was to pushed for time this week to go searching and ordering stuff. Its all good now though, so im happy.

Anatoli, thanks for the offer. We have to catch up next time im in the PA/NJ area.
