Power lift gate doesn't close all the way

Been having an intermittent problem with our 2012 CX-9 GT. The power lift gate won't always close itself all the way - it leaves it open just enough to set off the "open door" warning, and indeed it isn't fully closed. This happens about half the time when you close the gate via the button on the gate itself. If you close it manually it closes fine. Any ideas on this? I did some quick Googling and found some similar issues relating to sensor strips or something?

I know the lift gate on my 14 has a "soft close feature", whether you do it with the power liftgate button or manually. Page 3-38 and 3-39 of the owner's manual talks about some of this, although not in great detail. I would say check the "jam-safe" sensors for scratches, but if they were beat up I would imagine the lift gate would open back up. Also could check the little guides on the lift gate to make sure they are line up correctly. Let us know if you figure it out though! (Or hopefully someone has a good solution for you)

I should also mention that i get a couple of beeps when it doesnt close properly.

We are having the same problem on our 2013. I guess a trip to the dealership is in order.
