Potentially stupid question..maybe..possibly :)

2008 White Mazdaspeed 3
Ok so my fiance owns a body shop so I'm sad to say I know more about body work and paint than I do about engine parts. I've been slowly learning more since I got my speed almost 2 months ago. So here's the question I want to mod the ole speed and i read BPV and BOV..bypass valves and blow off valves got that part...WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? I'm not sure about the differences or how they work on a car or what not.

Oh and which is better to have?

Basically, the bypass valve(BPV), diverter valve, whatever you want to call it just keeps all of the metered air in and recirculates it back into the engine.

A blowoff valve(BOV) just shoots all of that air into the atmosphere.

They can be interchanged on cars without MAF sensors, but since our car has a MAF its not recommended to use a blow off valve because the air is metered, and the cars ecu uses that air as part of a calculation to determine how much fuel to add. If the ecu is expecting ther to be mmore air, it'll add more fuel, and you'll get super super rich.

Hope that helps.

Makes sense. I guess I'll go with the BPV when I'm ready, from what I read sounds like Forge is the way to go. Thanks NN22175

I have the turbosmart on my car.. its a 50/50 BOV. Meaning 50% Vent to Atmosphere and 50% Recirculation.. thing works pretty good and sounds amazing. I cream myself almost everytime I hear it still lol. Thing is expensive though. I mainly just wanted something for the sound (the ricer in me I guess!!!). Really anything is better than the stock BPV cause it leaks like a mother!! The forge peice is a very nice and well made product from what I hear. Makes a cool little Kink! sound to when it goes off.

I purchased the Forge and I am pleased. The spring and shim system are pretty cool. I am swapping around now, tomorrow I will use the yellow with no shim for fun. next week the red with two shims. uh oh. Seriously the new valve and upgraded tubes have made an inconsistent car very steady. I have boost I hold boost and can get more rpms than the stock set up.

I don't understand the huge attraction some seem to have to the vent to air blow off valves? If the car is designed to run a bypass, and you put on a vta just to advertise your turbo, is that not pretty ricey? ie your drawing attention to yourself at the expense of performance and reliability. Not exactly the best thing now is it?

whats the difference in colors? and what are shims lol

A shim is like a spacer, basically it will give the spring inside the bpv more or less tension to make it harder or softer.
Hope that makes sense.
