My Average: 9.390 L/100Km - 29.958 MPG (through 31 fillups)

lowest: 10.741L/100Km - 26.19 MPG
highest: 6.519L/100km - 43.15MPG

I'm quite disappointed in the fuel economy of this car. I do tend to hit it kindof hard, but even when I'm not, I can't get better than about 25-26mpg. What the hell good is it to have a pansy-ass 4-cylinder engine if we're not going to be getting over 30mpg?

Patrick

edit: you people getting 43mpg... what the hell are you doing - putting it in neutral and letting it roll down a 200-mile hill?

I can get around 550 Km in a tank, not sure what's that is in mpg?? and I use the cheapest gas I can find in city 87.

i'm getting around 22 on my autostick with regular (87 octane?) gas. i do mostly hard city driving. I just reccently hit 6k miles and have noticed a 2-4 mpg increase.

my problem with the 4 gears is that when i get on the highway just north of 80 mph i'm revving at almost 3500 rpm......i wish i had 5 gears and a clutch :(

It's the same RPM with the 5 speed. I've always gotten 32-33 mpg , since I drove the car home-with 38 miles on it. The only exceptions are trips-28mpg(through the mountains loaded down w/ A/C) and the time I brought it to the dealer-29 mpg. They ran it the whole time it was being serviced w/ the a/c on.(~45minutes)

I use 87 octane and got 29mpg on my trip from vegas i was going 80-90mph the whole way.

sorry, i've never looked at any gear ratios.....so you manual drivers just get the advantage of ridiculously better acceleration due to some closer gears and a bunch more torque going to your wheels

maybe someday i'll get lucky and have a tank at 30+ mpg

Don't be sorry. Yeah, the loss from the auto tranny is pretty bad. Though gridlock is much easier to deal with. I just wish I could get decent mpg on my trips. It's still better than my old Grand Marquis, worse than my civic, and the same as my turbocharged 2.3L stang. Of course once I get the roof box the milage will get even worse.... :(

I used to get about 400-420 a tank using cheap gas 87 octane. The only mods I had were an injen cai and a mazdaspeed exhaust. Now I get around 300-340 a tank running 93 octane. My mods now are spool stage 1, 2 1/2 turbo back custom exhaust, APEXi S-AFC, cannabelized injen cai, and a bunch of other stuff. I'm prayin for the gas prices to go

Yeah, I average mid 20's. I can get 30+ when cruising on the highway 80'ish and even better going slower. I drive my car hard and keep the rpm's up. I use 87 and average between 280-330 before the gas light comes on.

Sorry to quote my own post, but... well... whatever.

I forgot to add that my old '93 Chevy Lumina with 150k miles on its V6 got better mileage (about 27mpg) than my 4-banger econobox P5 does now and I drove it about as hard. Also, my fiance's '96 V6 Lumina with 100k miles on it gets over 30mpg. What gives? I'm sure as hell not getting low gas mileage because Mazda decided to trade that for big power.

Something's not right. You'll have a hard time explaining to me why a big heavy Lumina with a V6 and 100k to 150k miles on it gets significantly better gas mileage than my brand new econobox I4 P5.

I have only done 1 really good test. I drove from so. cal to las vegas.. straight on 1 tank of gas. I think I got about 31 MPG. But my avg. is more like 27~28. Especially cuz I have a heavy fo0t! :D :D :D

i get about 300 miles per tank so what ever that averages out to and i use premium as long as its under $2 a gallon

Common Complaint

There indeed is something about this engine, possibly it's the aerodynamics of the car, or maybe the stock tires (or a combination of all of the above!) that causes our "econo" cars to perform worse in efficiency than other vehicles-- Including many with larger engines and greater vehicle mass.

We need variable valve timing and a block not weighted in heavy-ass iron... Like the new MZR's.

I'll be very interested to see if Mazda has addressed their (comparatively) poor fuel economy standards in the upcoming Mazda3.

I hope they have, because it indeed is difficult to accept the mediocrity demonstrated by the FS-DE when you had earlier become used to better efficiency in your previous car; similar to my personal experience.

Just on my 3rd tank and getting better than 10L/100km (~28mpg). Car is a 5spd, all city driving, and just rolled 1000km. It's still slightly better than my 91 240sx that I used to own.

I've been averaging about 29-30 MPG in the city and about 32-36MPG on the highway. Right now about 36000km and goin strong.

Damn, only today did I finally do the math and figured out I'm only getting 20 mpg (12.4 gallons for 246 miles). But that's what I've been averaging - 240 to 250 miles per tankful. That can't be right.

The car is stock, tires checked and inflated to 32 psi weekly, no lead footing and 50/50 city/hwy. Is it 'cause I only have 3600 miles, and I should expect it to improve?

I got about 30mpg in the summer.

I got about 20mpg in the winter.

Car must run rich when it's cold...

WTF....i've only been getting 22mpg. since i got my catback i got 24mpg. all on 92 which costs about $2.20 here in hawaii.
