2003.5 mazda protege
Well i bought this car about a week ago and my uncle was test driving it one day and it threw a CEL. i had it read and it was po171. We did a vacuum test on it and the hoses were at 14 psi at idle.. the rod on the back of the wastegate didnt move any. ( dont know if this is a problem or not. Its my first turbo car) Well the elbow thats on the outside of the waste gate, we clamped it off to see if the vacuum raised and sure enough it went straight up to 23 - 24lbs Does this mean that the waste gate actuator is bad? i need some help fast. I have to decide if im goin to send this car to mazda and have them fix it.

yes i know, and i know what causes it.

MAF - dirty or faulty
Vacuum leak

like i said, i believe its leaking at the waste gate internally. which would cause it to not work. I was just seeing if someone encountered this problem or if it seems logical.

i understand but your totally skipping my question. i have been trouble shooting the vacuum system because everything else seemed ok. I just need to know if its possible that the waste gate goes out and causes a vacuum leak like im seeing

uhh yeah, it's a vacuum leak, so bring it to the dealer so you don't have to **** with it and possibly **** more s*** up!

haha alright thats all i wanted to know, i didnt want to be told where to go look at and what the causes were. I know them and i trouble shooted. My uncle turned that rod and pushed it in and out, did that change anything? Should i be scared driving it? haha

just don't go into boost while driving it to the dealer.

yes it is entirely possible the wastegate actuator is faulty and mazda has been replacing them.

But by turning or playin with that rod in the back of the wastegate, would that change the boost or is it totally something different?

anyone at all? i just want to make sure that nothing was changed so i dont worry so much in driving it. Sorry i dont know much about turbo charged cars yet. im slowly getting there :)

the wastegate actuator changes the boost, hence the reason your boost went up when you clamped it. When you move it, it changes the boost level. Just take it easy when you drive and don't go into boost.

hmmmm......your not pulling proper engine vac (assuming it was correctly tested), and your getting a CEL light that says your running lean..... sounds like a vac leak to me. The only other possibilty, as mentioned, is that your WG actuator is ****** and your overboosting on top of having a vac leak in your WG actuator. Thats my guess. best of luck finding your problem

car is at mazda, ill know something tomorrow. Im hoping its under the extended warrenty. (the waste gate) that would be amazing. i am short on cash so thats the only reason for not going aftermarket.

just to let u know, it was the waste gate after all.. Luckily it was covered under the warrenty. so they gave me a mazda 6 to drive around and i cant wait to get the MSP back. Thanks guys!

well ive had the same problem. the dealer told me it was a wasgate. so i took it somewhere else and they said it was running lean, so they replaced a bad maf and it was good for about a week and the cel came back? any suggestions
