I'm going to Plast-Dip the alloy wheels of our M2 tomorrow and i thought i would be a good idea to post the progress here so anyone can follow it :)

Why Plasti Dip instead of paint?
1. 100% reversible - if I don't like it, I wait for it to dry and I can peel it off!
2. Reduced prep time - as long as the surface is clean and dry you're good :)
3. No sanding or priming required!
4. Quick drying and easy clean up.

How to prep your wheels for painting:
Really, no prep work involved besides washing and drying. I already cleaned all the wheels thoroughly, so that i will only have to clean them ligthy just before painting :D I already arranged a pair of jack stands so i can paint two wheels at once :)

For those that dont know what Plasti Dip is, look here :)

First things first: Cleaning!

I cleaned the rims one by one to make it easier for me to get to the 'hard-to-reach' places

They definitly need some love ;)

Cleaning In Progress

Done! :D

Very cool! One can per wheel? How much did it cost?

It should be possible with 2-3 cans for all the wheels, at least thats what i've learned from browsing around searching for more information about Plast-Dipping rims. I ordered four cans just to be sure (and maybe i'll dip the logos too :)).

It's quite hard to get in the Netherlands, but i managed to get four cans for €11,40 each, which is around $15 per can. The cost of shipping was an additional €11, so the whole thing costs me around $75 :)

Ah, didn't realize you were in Europe- I don't even know where the Euro key is on my keyboard. :)

I just looked up Plasti-Dip on Amazon- they seem to run about $6-8 for a can of spray, so that's not horrible.

Was there any special technique to getting a smooth coat? Or does it lay down pretty flat after you spray?

The Euro-key should be "Ctrl + Alt + 5", that's how we have to get it using a US-International style keyboard :D

As for the price of a can, it really is much cheaper in the USA then overhere. It probably has got something to do with the fact that it's full of nasty flammable stuff ;)

I have got no real experience with the stuff yet, i'm going to 'paint' the rims tomorrow morning, so you'll have to wait for pics and stories about how it went (nailbyt). You can find a lot of howtos and examples about Plast-Dipping on Youtube :)

lol, I really hope that "sub" means subscribed or something (scratch) This is what i found on the internet about "sub":

The definition of SUB is "Submissive person in BDSM" or "Submarine sandwich" (thumb)

Here are some WIP-pics, i'm waiting for the first two wheels to dry as i'm typing this :)

lmao! subscribing it is...as yoda would say. I wanted to see how the white turned, which it looks rather good!

That looks good, can't wait to see it on the Car! I was actually looking to do do my wheels the same way... but our US wheels do not look that good. :)

those white wheels will deffinately look good on the black car. ive had my plasti-dip for over 3 weeks.. just waiting for a nice day to do it. lol ill be doing the flat black on the US style wheels

The Plast-Dipping went very well as you can see on the pics i posted earlier :)

It took me around 6 hours to Plasti-Dip all the wheels, every wheel has 3 thick coats on the outside and 1 thin coat to finish it off. The inside only has one layer because there already was a good layer of Plasti-Dip from spraying the outside of the rims.

It all starts with lifting the car so you can easily remove two tires at a time. I borrowed some jack stands so i could lift the car safely :)

I used some flyers to make sure there would be no overspray on the tires

Time for spraying!

The results :D

Ohhh... thought for whatever reason that you laid down a lighter shade of grey or something. You hadn't painted them yet. :)

And Ctrl Alt 5 doesn't do anything on my keyboard. I'm sure I could set up a hotkey / shortcut, but it's easier to just type out "Euros" when your typing speed is almost in the triple digit per minute range most of the time. :D

And the pictures look GOOD! I love that white wheel look. I might have to do this on my truck wheels.
