Welcome!

As for first mod, I recomend a Valentine 1 best radar detector you can get, see Car and Driver Feb 2002.

But as for other mods...
Boost gauge, MBC or EBC, AFR gauge, CAI, FMIC, 3" turbo back exaust

JMHO

Honestly guys, a 3" turbo back exhaust is way overkill for this car. Even with a jump to 9-12 psi, this is just flat out a waist of money.

Consider this: in 1986 when Ford put our SVO Mustang, it was producing 190hp from a 2.3L 4 pot, with 8:1 Forged pistons and a Garrett T-3 turbo pushing 15psi of boost. This was exiting through a measly little 2.25" single that split into a 2.25" dual exhaust.

No one on this board is running 15psi on pump gas on a daily basis with this car that I know of. So why in the world, would you need a 3" turbo back exhaust if you were just going to run 9 or 10psi at the most? A 2.5" turbo back exhaust would be plenty big enough for 99% of the people on this board.

I'm not saying a 3" will hurt ya (other then in the pocket) but unless your future goal is a stronger motor, a bigger turbo, a better tranny and heavier clutch, why spend money unnecessarily?

JM not so HO :)

^^^read kenetix's sig...daily 15psi

I don't read everyone's sig line, that's why I said "that I know of". He lists 3 cars, and since I'm not up to speed on all the Mazdas, I don't know which of his RX-7's may or may not be rotory powered. But judging by the size of his tail pipe, he must really need a 3" exhaust on his MSP  J/K

I WORK IN COLUMBUS - LIVE OVER IN ALABAMA - MORE HOUSE FOR THE DOLLAR OVER THERE - AND THE NIGHT TALK IS BECAUSE I AM A NIGHT OWL AT HEART - CRUISING THE STREETS, GOING OUT, HAVING FUN WHILE I AM STILL YOUNG -- TAKING ON MECHANICAL BULLS IN FRONT OF A THOUSAND STRANGERS - YA KNOW THAT SORT OF THING..........I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START

Welcome CatchMe! :D
 Mechanical bulls, eh? that's cool as s***.

Mods:
1st and foremost is a Boost Gauge and Injen Intake (or Ion's or Spool's). Depends on how much flash you want.

Then get a Boost Controller and 2.5" Turbo Back Exhaust.

Other than that, I wouldn't do anything else.

Oh, if you don't like a big front mout intercooler (FMIC) then go with the Mazdaspeed Upgrade due to be out some time (don't ask b/c I don't think anyone can tell you)

Happy Hunting.

You guys have given me a lot to start with - some of which I have no clue about - but that's okay - I'm sure I can find a local tutor to bring me up to speed........I think the first thing I am going to do is figure out the freaking radio and then I'll find some local Speed owner to help me out with the rest - and Topher it was probably me that bought that black one that you guys had to go and get from Atlanta - I'm assuming anyway since there is only one Mazda dealership in Columbus.........................

that would be us. if you need any help, let me know! i told david to give you this website...enjoy!

Welcome to the board.... hope you enjoy your new car as much as i am enjoying mine!

1st off owning a turbo car requires some love and attention...
Use Synthetic Oil after the 1st or 2nd oil change... Mobil 1 is good stuff.
Boost Gauge.. if you plan on tuning boost, you HAVE to have this. Turbo Matty P blew his motor after running without one and turning up his boost. Was there a direct connection? possibly, but we'll see.
A/F gauges: Waste of money IMO.... stock sensors that show data on the gauge are unreliable and off.. some people swear by them anyways.. i'd suggest Oil Pressure, or Exhaust gas Temp.
MBC.. JoeP's MBC is Awesome. night and day from stock boost to 9 or 10psi, which is a safe limit for an other wise stock MSP.
FPR. Someone said earlier this was an adjustable Regulator. This is REDUCER. Our cars run rich, meaning too much gas is injected. This reduces fuel pressure just slightly, and cures some of what ails this car. There is a flash from Mazda soon, but i think its worth it.
Exhaust. 3in is probably overkill, and 2.5in will work fine. The price difference isnt as much as people have said, IF you go custom, which is what i would suggest.
Intake: Injen, Spool, ION, all have em out, and more to come. Id see if someone local can bend a pipe or 2 for you and go this route. Cheaper and just as effective..
Intercooler: Depending on your goals, yuou can upgrade the i/c to Front mount, or just upgrade the pipes. The stock plastic is very restrictive, and is crap, and i think for basic tuning, a FMIC is probably overkill...

hope that gives you some more ideas... enjoy the car!!

Welcome.

Far and away the most bang for the buck mod you can do is a boost gauge and an EBC. Or if you want to go the cheap route get JoeP's MBC. EBC are worth the extra money IMO though.

After that then it's kind of up to you. Personally I'd go with a CAI more for the looks and sound than anything. Then get rid of the 'S' pipe in the exhaust. I wouldn't bother wasting money on JoeP's FPR until the ECU flash from Mazda comes out and we see how good that works. If it works like it should then there's no reason to have Joe's FPR. Obviously this question won't be answered fully until the flash is out though, which is hopefully very soon.

Topher - any suggestions where I can get good parts/work locally? Tell David thanks for getting me a black one and tell him my only problem is there is some rust on the rotors......RRRRRRRR.

thanks I'll do that - I think CAI is going to be my first project - is the difference truly worth it??

i think so...
when you get a chance, stop by here and i'll introduce you to rob...he does damn good work at a DAMN good price.

You guys crack me up. A female comes on board asking n00b questions and you give more info than she can handle. A guy comes on, does the same and gets beat to s*** ( USE THE SEARCH BUTTON YOU F"N NOOB!, Etc). Such chivalry here on the forum today. :p

BTW: If I ever meet a woman in a MSP I will ask her to marry me. :D

you are right I'm new to this little scene you boys have going here - I don't have a clue what all your little acronyms are and I don't know much about cars other than there is nothing sexier than me riding in a hot car, I like to go fast, and I am ready to learn - I just need someone to show me the way. You gotta crawl before you walk.......

I spent a grand total of about $15 for my home made CAI, so yes, I'd say mine was worth it :D
