Phen's China Adventure

Well, I spoke too soon. I was at Yashow today and while I was in the Adidas store, I had a couple folks come up to me and start speaking Chinese. Fortunately, I remembered how to say "I don't understand," and they started speaking English. One girl asked me where I was from. I just happened to have on my Dusty Armadillo t-shirt. That didn't help much, so I pointed to a LeBron Cavs jersey that they still had there and that cleared it up. Haha.

haha nice. Have you noticed name brands are like 20% more expensive?

Umm... yes and no. I just bought a pair of Adidas shoes (because I forgot my running shoes) and the same pair in the states would have been $98 and I paid $102 US.

s***, I really fell off the wagon here...

September 1: Spent the majority of the day just trying to get caught up with documents. Such a pain.

September 2: Took a walk to go exploring after work. Found the local McDonalds and gave it a shot, just to see. First food that's made me sick the entire time here.

September 3: One of my fellow expats' wife made dinner for the other expats. She is Korean so we ate some homemade Korean food. Freaking good stuff. Hung out there most of the night, swapping stories, drinking beer.

September 4: Golf in the morning. Afterwards, Roger took me around town to show me Yashow Market and Jenny Lou's Market, which is a western grocery store. I was able to get some food from home in case of emergencies. Hahaha.

September 5: Sundays are typically my day to either explore, or relax and do some reading, or get caught up on other things. This time, it was a TV day. I felt like poop. Homesick type feeling. I bought the entire set of Star Trek: The Next Generation DVDs at Yashow on Saturday, so I spent time watching a few episodes. Well... more like 7, but yeah...

September 6: Back to the office. Pretty much your standard day of having a bunch of information dumped on me to review. I also had to prepare for a meeting with a customer who was supposed to come in today. Meeting got pushed to Tuesday. A load off of my mind. Explored the exercise room. Private to the expats. Inside, some weight machines, a brand new treadmill, stationary bike, Nordictrac, and a nice slate pool table. Ran for 20 minutes then shot a couple games of pool.

September 7: Meeting with the customer. All day long. Went well, even though the guy didn't speak much English. Ms. Lin had to translate for me when necessary. After work, we had a banquet with the customer. This is when I found out that servers at some Chinese restaurants will never let your beer glass be empty... 3 large bottles of Yanjing Beer later...

September 8: A somewhat low-key day. Most of the day was spent reviewing drawings that were just given to me, and preparing to teach a class to some new engineers.

Umm... things are a bit rushed, but nothing like South Korea. Once work time is over, people seem to be rather chill when it comes to a lot of things. It's just soooo damn busy around town. Not as many holidays as we have in the States.

There are a lot of bars I'm finding here. However, where I am is quite far from most of them.

Are all of the gas companies owned by the government? I don't remember. I know some countries do that, and it's the same price everywhere. I remember it was over 12$ a gallon when I was in England, but that was when the dollar was really weak and the pound was really strong.

I love Next Gen!

Sorry!

star trek tng ftw!

and lol that mcdonald makes you sick.

(american) chinese food does the same to me!

They also had TOS, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. I may pick each of them up to take home with me.

Yeah, I remember when my dad was buying the seasons of TNG like 7 years ago they were around 100-120$ each season...

I paid $380 RMB for the set. That's about... $50 US.

Fifty dollars for all 7 seasons?! I did buy about 10 albums while I was there because they were 3$ each, and it included the feature album plus another CD by the same artist. Or in the case of Will Smith, the second CD was 50 Cent.. so I guess they thought black was black? I'd check that out at a local mall if you want any music.

Yeah, the Yashow store had a decent selection. I'm still trying to find a good time to walk to the Wanda mall.

Oh, something I didn't think of, those DVD's will probably be a different region, but that's a small matter if you have the right software.... I might happen to know someone who does....(sssh)

The DVD player in my apartment sucks ass. I've been using my laptop and it works perfectly fine. It says that the region is NTSC.

Most DVDs in China are PAL. You can get the DVD players there though. REGION FREE and PAL AND NTSC compatible!

Gas is double i think?

Yeah, I've looked at a few DVD players at Sam's Club. Not really worth my cash if it works on my laptop.

Today I just bought a bottle of Mongolia King. 38% abv. I figured I'd try a cheap bottle before I got the high priced stuff. It's... not too bad. I'm going to bring a bottle home, but not sure which yet.
