Phen's China Adventure

Aug 30: Busy day in the office. Went to a local Kodak shop to get my photo taken for passport / Visa use. I need to get my Visa extended for China, as well as get a Visa for Vietnam as I will be going there in a couple of weeks. Found out that I can access the roof of the apartment building, so I'm hoping to go up there tonight and get some good shots of the surrounding area.

What part of Vietnam are you going to? I was there last winter, really enjoyed that country!

I'm not exactly sure yet. I know one of the offices is in Hanoi.

I recommend going to a movie theater. Assigned seats, way louder than normal theaters, booze allowed and chinese subtitles if you watch an american movie lol

Haha, nice! I'll have to check and see where the nearest one to me is. The problem with being where I am is that there isn't much as far as shopping or entertainment is concerned. There is the Shijingshan Amusement Park a few blocks away, but I've never seen it open.

There's one 2 km away (Click). It's a mall called 万达广场 (Wan Da Mall). These are the movies playing. Looks like Expendables is the way to go lol.

Oh yeah, I know where that one is. I stayed at the Pullman Wanda the first day I was here.

Aug 31: Spent most of the morning downtown at the Chinese Police Station applying for an extended Visa for China. I expect to be here for 3-4 months and multiple entries, but since this was my first time, I only got a 30 day visa and 2 entries. Not quite enough because I'm going to Vietnam in a few weeks. After all that fun, I went to dinner with a potential customer and several folks from the company. We went to Lao She Teahouse for dinner. Amazing place with lots of history. Amazing food.

no cute Chinese girls as your waitress?

Not at Lao She. Had a dude and a not so cute one with a bit of weight on her. However, I followed a different server going up the stairs when I first got there and let me say. Holy s***! I've seen some nice ones. It's kinda unfortunate that I'm in the Shijingshan district because there are no bars here... except for the KTV across the street (I just learned what that was). I need to go downtown, but all week I've been busy after work. I think we're going to the market Saturday after golf.

Me love you long time!

I've never been to China, is the crime rate lower than the US? I wonder if their culture is more civil than here in the US LOL

As far as I know the crime rate is lower. Mainly because the cops don't **** around here. You screw up, you get punished long time.

(werd)

I remember one of my college Profs telling me he was teaching in China yeeeaaars ago and some dude got caught selling marijuana. He was arrested, shot, and his family was billed for the bullet.

Not that that's the case now. Like I said, this was years ago.

"Oooo you wanna bleak da raw? *BOOOM* Bleak it now tough guy!"

Hahaha. They're really nice people so far that I've met. I just wish I knew as much Chinese as some of them know English. I feel like a douche coming over and knowing s*** compared to them being able to have a conversation with me in my language.

I felt the same way when I went to Austria for work... It made me feel inferior to only know one language. I tried to pick up a couple phrases and words while I was there. I'm sure you'll know some Chinese by the time you're done.

I know the important phrases...

"Hello"
"Thank You"
"Please bring me a beer."

Bathroom is anywhere you take a piss. I found this one out.

Right phrases, wrong order....

"Please bring me a beer."
"Thank You"
"Hello"

I felt the same when I was stationed in Panama (even though I had taken Spanish for two years in high school). Each country has different slang and when they speak really fast, I can only pick up a word or two. Like Jenn said, you'll pick it up as your stay lengthens.
