Perfworks Kit on my AT, First Impressions

Well, it's been a long time coming.

I'VE GOT BOOST.:D

Took my car for it's first tuning drive yesterday. Nick (Sr.) used the laptop to tune while I drove. Ran up to around 7-8 psi. No detonation.

The car isn't done just yet. Still more road tuning to be done. Then it goes to the Dyno for final tuning. But this is my only car, so I took it home last night so I could go do laundry and stuff tonight. I'll try to take some pictures later tonight, it's not all painted yet; so the pics are a "work in progress" type thing.

Let's see - how to describe it. Fun, scarey, intriguing, and Addictive. Yeah, I can already see where someone would want to run more boost. I've got my self control though, as evidenced by the fact that this morning on the way to work, I never let it get into the boost, except for once when I was pulling out onto the PKWY, and even then, it only got up to maybe 2 or 3 psi. Frankly, I'm going to go very easy on it, as I don't want to have any problems. When they are done tuning it, then I'll start having fun with it. For now though, the hardest I will get on it is when they are in the car with me. Also, my car is full of parts, the trunk has all the stuff that used to be in my backseat, and the backseat is full of body panels, floormats and boxes and other random items. In short, the car is a mess on the inside right now, but I don't care. More important things to worry about like getting laundry done. With the Automatic tranny, it pulls nicely - shifts through the gears with no problem. I got on the gas pretty good yesterday, but I never floored it. Most of the time I backed off the throttle just because I was kind of scared with the feeling of boost. Never felt it before. I haven't played with the "sport mode" in the boost range yet. But I did use it this morning to accellerate without going into the boost range. The boost comes on under load, so if you downshift, there is less load, and that helped keep me out of boost.

I'm hoping to go back to the shop on Wednesday. They have alot of cars there right now though, so I'll see what happens.

it gets really fun...i am only doing 4.5 for now, dont want to **** up the only car i got...

Yeah, engine management is nice.

I'll tell you what though, even just like 3 pounds is really noticeable. Hell, I can tell the second I am building boost. You can feel the difference actually just before it hits 0 on the gauge. I guess it might be the feeling of the turbo spinning fast enough to overcome the vacuum. Yeah, I think that would make sense that even just running with little to no vacuum would make a difference in how the car feels.

It's definitely a learning experience.

Cool, and nice to hear you like it. Cannot wait for mine to be installed.

Yeah, it's fun. Really fun.

Do you have an Auto too? I want to see some people turbo AT's so that we can find out more.

yeah, and you probably know of DeckedoutMP5 also and auto with the HiBoost kit already installed.

Man, I would love to get boosted. What exactly does driving under boost feel like. I always wanted to know. Be descriptive (i.e. sound, feel, torque, shakiness, etc.). I am drooling over everyone's setups. Very nice. Can't wait to see pics. I hope to one day be boosted as well. I have an AT too. Perhaps enough people get boosted ATs then we can add a Forced AT section to this forum. See you guys on the darkside one of these days. Peace.

What does it feel like, well, the car feels pretty normal when you drive lightly. As you accelerate, you look at the boost gauge and see the vacuum decrease. When it's only got about 3 left to go, you can feel the vacuum is almost gone and the revs increase faster, at 0 the revs are moving fast and the turbo is spooling, you watch the boost gauge pass 3, then 5, and the car pulls harder the higher you go. When you let off the throttle, you can hear the pressure vented either to atmosphere by a BOV or back into the intake via a recirculating valve. BOV's are lounder, sound kind of like a sneeze, recirculating valves aren't so loud, but still noticable, kind of sounds like a large animal choking or breathing heavy. BOV's can cause your engine to run lean, so I don't use one. I'm sure both have their trade off's - though from what I have read, the only reason people buy BOV's is because they like the sound they make. I would rather have something safe then something that sounds kewl, but that's just me.

I'm still in the tuning process, I'll try to give you a better report as things progress.

Congratulations, Micah. I am anxiously waiting for more results and the dyno from you. My auto could use a turbo, so keep us updated.

bout time you got that hoopdy done! J/K So she feels good huh? I can't wait for mine to be on the road. I have everything on, just have to set up the piggyback. When are you dyno tuning? Maybe I'll come up and do mine the same day if he's got time. You got to get into boost a little more so you can tell us how it feels. If not, I'll tell everyone how mine feels with a full 3" and a bigger turbo:D

What makes you say that?

Glad to hear that you're enjoying FI! It rocks! Worth the wait?

Yeah, boost is great! I run 15-17 psi on my stang normally (no IC ), but have buried the 30psi gauge. That was insane!(shocked) Burned the crap out of the tires through 1,2 and 3 gear. It in pieces at my friends house, got to get it together...:(

I ment where has he been. I haven't seen a post from in him in a while.

Well, as far as I can grasp it, once the BOV vents, your ECU can't see the change in airflow, and is unable to compensate. Maybe it makes it run rich then??? I really am not sure (only got like 4 hours sleep last night)- still learning as I go.
