I am going to get a desktop with

Pentium 4 640 3.2 HT

or

Pentium D 820 2.8 Dual core

Which one is better with the same price?

Please no AMD word here..dont ask y..

dunno... check some sites for which one is better for what you wanna use it for.. if it's for gaming. the 640 is better than the 820, and the a64's just stomp on the pentiums.

xbitlabs review

Tom's Hardware

might wanna read up on these sites for starters.

What are you going to be using the computer for? That is what determines which route to go.

Any multitasking work such as 3D animation, photo editing, video editing, heavy gaming?

Dual core is the way to go. I have the Pentium D 820 2.8 and it's awesome. I can multi task so much easier and it's quick.

What is the primary purpose of the computer? If its games, the dual core isn't going to help much. And the added clock speed will make a difference.

If you are using it for general use, then a dual core will make the machine feel snappier.

I said NO AMD WOrD...

damn i just order my Dell

3.2 P4 HT
1GBDDR2
160 ATA HD
ATI x600 256 with TV tuner

689 shipped..

Dell 9100 is kick ass. I opted for the 17" Flat panel over the dual Pentium 4's

why no AMD word when they are superior than Intel

damn, that's not a bad deal, a much better deal than when I bought mine. Only difference is I have a Pentium D 820

.....FALSE... depends on how the applications are written.

same thing with computers running SLI or Crossfire setup, depends on how the game is written. proof is on the tomshardware website.

In the future, all applications will be written to make use of multiple processors. But for the moment dual core may not pose an advantage and instead may hinder the performance of your computer.

well he said, no AMD, so I take it he had bad experience with it and thread title is P4 vs. PD.

like the other poster said, go to tomshardware.com.
Depending on what your using the computer for,
Dual core most likely uses more electrcity than your regular P4 (depends on which models your compare). If you can justify the price increase in getting dual core and your electrcity bill, then go ahead.

edit: that sounds like a good deal. you might want to check out what kind of motherboard that comes with. Seems a bit cheap. Any dvd/dvd burner? Card readers? built in audio?

thx for ur reply. The reason i said no AMD..it was because ppl will jsut said AMD RULES...AMD kiss ASS and intel vs AMD will going on forever...

ya..they come with one DVD rom and one DVD DL Burner. No card reader but i have a usb card reader rite now. Integred Audio...i dont know much about the motherboard tho

i am talking about 3.2HT vs PD 2.8 820

so i think PD is alway better...but i have already bought mine is oon shipping rite now.

Mine is exactly the same except I have dual core and a 19in Ultrasharp monitor and a modem. Other than that, mine's the same comp as yours. I think you'll like it although I do wish I had an Nvidia graphics card instead of an ATi card at the moment.

for that price, I think you got a nice deal =), good find!

the X600 is a good card. If ppl say that the 6600GT is better, they are right. But it doesn't matter, the X600 is a good card nevertheless.

People say AMD is better with no justification is retarded. However, they are right. AMD chips do perform better, produces less heat and uses less electrcity. You can see that this is the case in the 'mother of CPU charts 2005' in tomshardware.

But the Intel model you got is enough for whatever it is your doing, unless your running a server or something. Watch your CPU temperature, I don't know if the stock dell cooling solution will cut it if your playing a CPU intensive game for a long period of time.
I just brought a computer at the end of Dec, so I researched into all of this.

if you are really that concerned about the components build the pc yourself you will save money and be able to upgrade individual components later on, saving you money again

do not get aol service, even if it is free
