Pedal Removal?

OK, I searched for this, and in the last 2 years have never seen a thread on it. I detailed the inside of my car last night, after finally having a decent March day, and for the second time, am unable to figure out how to remove the foot rest aluminum "pedal" as well as the gas pedal. I want to remove them to clean underneath; the carpet and the holes in the gas pedal respectively. The foot rest has phillips screws and the gas pedal has what appears to be Torx screws, but they just spin, and do not loosen or tighten. I felt underneath, and there appears to be a plastic piece that the screws go into, but they also just spin with the screw. WTF, how do these come off?

BTW, did anyone else notice our gas pedal and the lever it attaches to are plastic? The cover is aluminum, but the rest is plastic.

Can't comment on the deadpedal plate. But I am familiar with the gas pedal.

First of all, yes the arm is plastic. It seems to be a common design to use plastic for the gas pedal. I'm not sure why. Maybe they don't want the weight of metal to weigh it down? I'm not sure. But I know the new EVOs have plastic arms for the gas pedal, in fact, there was a few documented cases of people snapping it in half. But I digress...

In order to take the pedal itself off, you want to remove the arm assembly from the firewall.

Just 3 10mm nuts holding it in place.

Now turn the assembly to it's side. You'll see why the torx bolt was spinning. You'll need pliers to hold the nut still as you remove the torx bolt. (btw, there is loctite on there, so it's a bit of a pain in the cramped area)

Thanks, that explains why it was so hard. I assume the dead pedal is the same way. I believe the carpet needs to be folded back to get at the fasteners, but then some of the door trim also needs to be removed to do this.

Yeah, I had heard about the EVO's gas pedal breaking. I thought it was interesting that this was mentioned, but nobody brought up the fact that ours is plastic as well!

Thanks again for the info!

i tried to remove the dead pedal plate this weekend....the screws do nothing....the carpet and pedal can get pulled up....and i couldnt get the plate off. the holes are full of dirt and grime and im forced to deal with it as my vaccuum and it attachments can only do so much. **cry**

Well I'm glad I'm not the only "freak" trying to clean there!
