Passenger seat airbag sensor - car discriminates!

I have a weird one, wondering if anyone else has seen this --

My 13-year old son is about 5' tall and around 110 lbs. When he sits in the front passenger seat the 'airbag off' light (or whatever it's called) turns on/off randomly. Sometimes he gets in and the light never turns on, other times it stays off for 10 minutes then lights up, or vice-versa.

When my wife or I sit in the seat, the light never comes on - which I would expect. My 10-year old daughter who is about 75 lbs, never sees this behavior when she sits in the seat either - the light stays off, indicating the airbag will deploy as designed in the event of a collision.

Either the car is possessed, or something with my son's physical build (he's a tall, skinny kid) is making the sensor go crazy. The QuickRef card shows a minimum weight of ~69 pounds to enable the airbag. Maybe his weight isn't distributed in the right spots to tell the sensor a person of sufficient weight is in the seat?

Anyone else see this or have ideas? I'll ask the dealer to look at it during our first service appointment (car as 1200 miles), but I'm guessing they won't find anything since it's only doing it for my 13 year-old.

(And he's not wearing metallic clothing, or a microchip or metal plates in his body that could screw with the sensor, that thought crossed my mind :-)

Thanks gang,
Bufffan

I have the same issue. Do a search, you will see it's a common problem, apparently with no solution.

Holy cr*p there arelots of similar stories, had no idea. Guess I'm not alone and the boy just has to get bigger...thx for the pointers.
