I knwo this was already discussed but I cant find it so .. I called my dealer today talked to them about it and they reffered me to the people who paint there cars for repair or custom... and i got qouted $4000.00 USD to have it done if I bring them the car with no interior(seats, console and carpet) and no engine also removing the plastic wheel linings and he siad normally they could get aroung it but since I would be going from black to Orange it would be best and since i told him I want ti to look just like the factory paint job as if it came that way .. he said he is super excited to do it .. if i will go through with it and said I would be the first one with it done .. what do you all think ... and I have my best buddy that owns a car lot in town adn he gives me two cars a month with his amex card and I sup them up ( suspension wheels and exhaust and intakes ...stuff like that) and we sell them sell them .. and he pays me $700 per car to do it .. so i am sure I can have it worked out to get the $ from him and then work it off hehe

$4000 seems a bit much if you are removing the engine and interior. With everything stripped, painting the whole car would not be bad at all. I am no body man though.

Yeah if $4000 included the prep work such as removing the interior and the engine, this may be worth it. Otherwise this is way too steep. When I had my Mazda RX7, the body shop I took it to stripped the interior, pulled all the small dings out, and repainted the entire car for about $2500. This was with them doing all of the work. If I wanted the engine bay painted, they would have pulled everything and painted it for an additional $1000. If I brought them a bare frame with all of the dents repaired, they would have painted it for $1800.

MP5Raycer I agree....the Protege5 in Spicy Orange would rock- HOWEVER put it all in perpective. Is a color worth all that much?! I mean, jeez.....4k, you could use that for an FM Turbo kit. Think about it, it's alot of money to dump man....and for something you really wont be getting practical use out of in daily driving. Technically it's for other people, lol, for other people to look and say wow thats cool. But what about the person who spent all the cash....is 4k worth a couple of head turns? If you have that kinda cash flow go with a turbo, that way you can actualy enjoy every minute of it while driving it daily. But that's just my 2 cents. :)

WOW are you getting ripped $4000 and your doing the prep work. No way would I do that. The paint can't be that expensive. And I can't beleive that a fairly new car would need that much body prep to get a color change. My old corrado got vandalized and as a result they had to take it down to the bare metal. To save money so that I could go with some mods instead of OEM I stripped all of the lights and trim and weatherstripping. That saved me about $175. When the car was done he asked if I wanted to put the stuff back on myself and I told him it wasn't worth the headache for $175. Anyway I had my car shot with PPG Dragon Green Pearl Effect paint and they took out like 20 little dings and a few other dents and did an unbelievable job and it only ran me $2700. This is the same shop that does all of the Porsches and BMWs and other highlines in town. He usually doesn't take anybody privately but I knew him so he did me a favor. Anyway just do some more homework and some price comparisons cause $4000 sounds like a rip. Just my .02. BTW I took home 1st at NOPI in my Class and best paint at another show I was in with that paint job.

Been there, done that...

And a factory appearing color change is a LOT of work. Gutting the interior is the least of the labor. Pulling the trim, fender liners, door seals and other trim takes a lot of labor also. Pulling the engine and cleaning out the engine bay IS a lot of work and may lead to problems on the reinstallation. I would guess that your are looking at at least 80 hours of labor to do what you want. Since you are starting with a black car, I'd consider leaving the engine room black and bring the new color around into a break line inside the hood.

Don't forget that cars are painted in pieces at the factory (doors, hoods, hatches, fenders, gas door, etc) and then assembled. The labor to mask an assembled car is extensive. Painting an assembled vehicle and making it look factory is a lot of labor. The materials cost and the actual painting make up a very small percentage of the job. Obviously the more you do yourself, the more you will save. Also, get at least three estimates from body or paint shops. In addition, try to find shops that do primarily custom work, instead of damage repair work. These shops will be more attuned to the sort of work you want. Jim

i dunno if the orange is really worth that much...but it could be, check around. we got an estimate on my bro-in-laws rx7...10k to repaint it to the original competition mica yellow...

Since you've got a black P5, I'd consider leaving the engine compartment black - Once upon a time, ALL cars had black engine compartments, no matter what color the car was painted, so it would look pretty natural, at least to me.

If your car was any other color, I'd be all for doing the engine area too, but since it's already black . . . . . I'd just do the underside of the hood, and the fender lips and let the rest of it be black.

you would have to remove all window moldings and ruber for it to look "factory". otherwise there is always some paint that gets on those and gives the car a cheap look. paint put on a car in a body shop is not as strong as at the factory since the equipment is not as good.

This is what I think:

Sell the P5 and buy a MazdaSpeed Protege in orange. You will be a lot happier than having a P5 repainted! You can NEVER get an aftermarket paint to look like the factory, unless you spend a fortune!

This is what you need:

What GXL said. :) Best of luck, whatever you decide. Peace.

Like Don said, leave the engine bay black. If you look closely the first MSP orange was once a black ES and the engine bay was still black when it showed at the NY car show.

well about the cost

I just have learned the hard way that you get what you pay for and I am super picky on details and I could pick out almost any car that has been repainted and most paint jobs do not leave your car looking factory or atleast in factory condition so I dont mind paying more and i mean I have a buddy and his truck has over 35,000 in the paint alone and he still aint happy so if you realy want to do things right and get the quality that you like then you have to pay for it .. and I have a guy that has done custom paint jobs for over 35 years so I could have him do it for cheaper but its one of those where if I am not satisfied with it I would not really be able to b**** at him like I could a autobody shop or another business if it is wrong so i just wanted this to be on here to get you'alls feed back and i am surprized that it has already had this many hits and I thank you it will give me another perspective on it .. hey maybe I could talk to the dealer and whan they have ther big opening for the Mazdaspeed I could have mine right next to it and they could pay for it or a portion of it for promotional stuff hehe
