P5 Top Speed?

I don't see why people are saying that a stock p5 can only go 118-125. On my way home from a friends house, I go down the 52 and it comes up on a huge hill. I can climb that hill at 100, then on the other side going down get to 125-130. But the car cuts off gas once I hit 134 after the straight away. This was a stock stick p5. Yes, I had to go down hill, but it shows its possible. Is the gas cut off something pokeing at the ECU hex could fix?

Finally somebody who has the same problem as me. I'm not going nuts.

My MP5 does the same thing at about 132 every time. I'll even have throttle left and be accelerating when the car shuts down.

Then @ 130 it resumes. On flat ground I could drive miles at 130 with no problems. Not that I would.

I don't see top speed very often. Now that I know that I don't have to olny governed Protege 5 in the US it bugs me that the car is governed.

I can draft a co-worker in his Lexus at 130 on the highway and not even strain the car. So yes the Proteges are soimewhat drag limited.

When we drive stupidly like this he will usually take it up to around 140 something just show me his Lexus is faster.

Working 3rd shift has its advantage, no traffic on the highway.
The Highway Patrol is even at home in bed on a call out basis.

My 93 MX-6 was governed at 130-something also - shut down every time. And I had plenty of throttle and RPM left.

I've been at 150 or so in my grandpa's old turbo diesel Mercedes. Senior year of high school I had borrowed it for prom. I was out on a back road to pick up my date, and I knew I had a straight of at least 10 miles so I floored it from a 55 mph roll. Little puff of black smoke came from the tailpipe as the turbo spooled (at the time I had no idea how a turbo worked) and I was at 150 in almost no time.

Smooth as a baby's ass. I could have been flying.

for my earlier post that i hit 126 in my STOCK p5...i was trailing my bro in his rx7...after we did the run he said i was running around 125 pacing him until he got bored and punched it...

anyways...the rx7 is fairly tuned along with the data aquisition unit...so i believe that the speeds he reads are pretty accurate...

I finally got a chance to open mine up and I got it up to 125-127mph. It took a little while though. The only engine mod I've done is put an AEM SRI on it.

I finally found out what kind of balls my 5 has when i raced a WRX coming back from Nopi's on Sunday. Of course I didnt leave him and he didnt "smoke" me. We held steady at 128 for about 40 seconds on this straight-away. I know I could've buried the needle a little deeper.

ive maxed out my speedometer in my 89 CRX Si plenty of times, and its all stock, speedometer says 120, but that s*** felt like 140. Little engine that could :D

ive gone 123 on my car up this last sunday on i75. . .i consider my car stock since all ihave is an hks axleback (makes noise)

Can anyone host a short vid? I'll show you what my stock lude will do :D If not I'll just take the ending pic such as above.

If the MP5 is cutting out at ~130mph stand alone fuel management possibly? I'll try to borrow the local dealership's MP5 for a day... :evil

The worse: my mom's '88 Dodge Caravan (I4) would only go 88mph. Could get it up to 95 on a down hill run but as soon as it flattened out... 88mph.

I think it's been established that the P5 is drag limited at around 130.

I personally don't care about what a Lude can do, no offense intnded. I could post a hundred cars that can go faster than a P5, but that's not why we're all here.

its no surprise you were actually able to keep up with a wrx at that speed. I have raced some awd vehicles and they don't have the power at high speeds because of the awd. They may get you off the line and maybe pull on you in second but once you get up there in speed their hindered by the awd. I had a awd eclipse try to keep up with my little crx I use to have on the highway, I laughed. Anyway, my question is to those who were saying the car goes above 140mph.....how are you reading this when the speedo stops at 140mph? At leats my speedo stops at 140. Just wondering.

you guys, if the police found out about all of this, theyd be dissapointed, we have speed limits for a reason you know.

my bests are:
120mph in my Neon, 145mph in my ex-bosses 97 corvette

**** the police....and on the subject of wrx's i concur. I have pulled some highway hell with 2 wrx's before and i noticed that they werent that crazy at higher speeds like a i thought they would be. They were both stock normal wrx's. I dont think the kids gave it all they got though. And actually i would think that a na engine would have an advantage over the turbo off the line...cause of turbo lag and all..added weight from awd and initial drivetrain loss. Although i can say that my parents Audi A4 3.0 quattro with 220hp NA would rip my p5 a new one any day of the week. japanese cars seem to have fairly high drivetrain loss.
oh and my bests are 120++ on the way to the NJ/PA meet...Acidbbg can verify this cause he was tailin me @ the same speed. 135 in a benz 450slc v8.
