My P5 hasnt been perfect:
Air conditioning switch is intermittent causing the air to shut off and back on, sometimes quickly. It happens regularly, but not frequently enough to reproduce at dealer.
Radio stopped playing cds
Clutch chatter since before 10,000 miles, now at 32,000. 3 area dealers did not recognize any TSB for the clutch chatter, neither did Mazda NA customer service. So Ive been stuck with it.
Cold engine rattle. Have also been told to live with it by the dealer.
Transmission grinds slightly going into second when its cold outside, no matter how slow you shift. This however seems to be considered pretty much normal for 5speeds Proteges among many people on the boards. The transmission is otherwise slow to shift into 2nd and I usually need to completely stop to get it into 1st. Again, this is probably more a trait, than a defect, but its very annoying. (sorry, Im used to Honda trannies)
A metal ziptie holding on a rubber bushing onto the front swaybar broke, causing the bushing to come out of position. Replaced it with a plastic ziptie. (cant be any worse than the POS that broke in the firstplace right?)
Oil refil cap leaks like a sieve. Dipstick reads about 1 inch above the full line when I put recommended amount of oil in car. I have to put 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart lower than recommended to get it closer to the top of the line.
Warped brake rotors at 12000 miles. Suppose that could be blamed on hard braking, which I occasionally do when having fun going into corners on the backroads. But I know people who spank their cars much harder than me, and have never had warped rotors.
Would I buy this car again? Probably, but as a second car, not my daily driver because of the hassles... I would also buy it used and out of warranty so I wouldnt feel ripped off by the poor customer service at the dealers around here. That way I could also do upgrades like motor mounts, stand alone ECUs, etc.
The thing is that this car is very fun to drive and has extreme handling limits for a stock compact econobox. And frankly if handling and looks is what you want, then this car really has no peer compared to whats out there anywhere near this price range.
This car is a love/hate relationship for me. But Im trying to accept its flaws, since Im not about to lose my shirt trying to sell it. I try to tell myself: They are not flaws or defects, it's "character"
