P5 Problems? Lots?

you know why i hate my car? it gives me neck problems. every time i walk away from it, i ALWAYS have to turn around and look at it again. then i say to myself, god dang, you're a sexy b****. yeah, it's definitely a love-hate thing.

I have 800 miles on my car and it rattles everywhere. I have a rattle in the passenger side door in both the front and back and I have two new rattles around the front of the moonroof...

Whata re the chances they will be able fix them when I take it in?

Only had my 5 since July - approx 3000K now.
Nothing major - few minor rattles come & go, vibration/noisy on cold start up
Overall a great car so far!

problems?

I disagree with uclap. I have seen a fair amount of manual troubles and automatic troubles on these forums,,,in fact, more about those clutches and syncros than any of the automatics. I have an auto, and it is not the greatest at changing gears, but has never failed me. I prefer the manual, but ended up with the auto.... no big deal cause my other ride is a 5-speed.....got the best of both worlds.

Second, the car may have its interior rattles depending on the cold or hot weather, but no car is perfect. I had troubles with the a/c, but they seemed to be cured. The cruise control is worthless on some of the cars cause it varies the speed too much. I still have a little of the cold start noise, but not nearly as bad as before the fix.....and actually it is a good indicator as to when the car is up to operating speed... which then lets me 'git on it'!

Other than that, the car is pretty much trouble free and is still fun to drive in any situation...city or open road!

That's a new one...never had any trouble with the cruise control, works perfectly and the transmission problem are very few when compared to other cars

28,000 miles, had the car for a year and half

gone through: 1 motor (my fault, hydrolock = broke rod), and a couple of bent shift forks, also the weak paint sucks, rock chips like nothing

but honestly the can is running fine, and I've had nitrous on it for over a year now (2thumbs)

myalternator went on me, got it relaced at no charge at the dealer in about 1 hour.

no major issues here

I've had my automatic for two years and have experienced 0 problems. Oh, and it has 20,000 miles.

Numerous consumer publications have, consistently, rated the protege as a "best bet".

I have had my Protege5 for 11 months now. 17,000km no problems. Autostick.

Well one, everytime I put this stuff called "gas" into it, it always seems to "leak" out :D

My P5 hasnt been perfect:

Air conditioning switch is intermittent causing the air to shut off and back on, sometimes quickly. It happens regularly, but not frequently enough to reproduce at dealer.

Radio stopped playing cds

Clutch chatter since before 10,000 miles, now at 32,000. 3 area dealers did not recognize any TSB for the clutch chatter, neither did Mazda NA customer service. So Ive been stuck with it.

Cold engine rattle. Have also been told to live with it by the dealer.

Transmission grinds slightly going into second when its cold outside, no matter how slow you shift. This however seems to be considered pretty much normal for 5speeds Proteges among many people on the boards. The transmission is otherwise slow to shift into 2nd and I usually need to completely stop to get it into 1st. Again, this is probably more a trait, than a defect, but its very annoying. (sorry, Im used to Honda trannies)

A metal ziptie holding on a rubber bushing onto the front swaybar broke, causing the bushing to come out of position. Replaced it with a plastic ziptie. (cant be any worse than the POS that broke in the firstplace right?)

Oil refil cap leaks like a sieve. Dipstick reads about 1 inch above the full line when I put recommended amount of oil in car. I have to put 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart lower than recommended to get it closer to the top of the line.

Warped brake rotors at 12000 miles. Suppose that could be blamed on hard braking, which I occasionally do when having fun going into corners on the backroads. But I know people who spank their cars much harder than me, and have never had warped rotors.

Would I buy this car again? Probably, but as a second car, not my daily driver because of the hassles... I would also buy it used and out of warranty so I wouldnt feel ripped off by the poor customer service at the dealers around here. That way I could also do upgrades like motor mounts, stand alone ECUs, etc.

The thing is that this car is very fun to drive and has extreme handling limits for a stock compact econobox. And frankly if handling and looks is what you want, then this car really has no peer compared to whats out there anywhere near this price range.

This car is a love/hate relationship for me. But Im trying to accept its flaws, since Im not about to lose my shirt trying to sell it. I try to tell myself: They are not flaws or defects, it's "character" ;)

lots of problems here

i am one of tose people who have no luck
latley my pr5 is shaking like crazy when i go into reverse
ans a;so my breaks always sound like they are grinding and i only have 12000 miles on my car.
anyone have any suggestion on what i should do

Only prob I had so far was a burnt out driver-side headlight at 23,872 miles (bought the car in Feb. 02). The dealership replaced it under warranty. That's it.

I have had less problems with this car than any other. Infact I have yet to find something mechanically wrong with my P5. 22,000km and counting
