P5 PCM(ECU) flash questions

So you replace a P5 ECU with an MP3 ECU and get "10hp". So now you need to run premium gas for an extra 10hp. Pleaseeeee..... an RSX with a 2.0L has an extra 30hp (over the 130hp of the P5) with regular gas. Even if you get the MP3 ECU for free, in the long run it will cost you more than its worth, imho.

Ahh..not exactly..yes..i did get it for free..But when when running nitrous like i am now..I always need to run the Highest OCTANE...So No i am not losing out...

I always ran highest octane on my car..it makes the car feel more alive!

There are certain aspects of the mp3 ecu that make it attratcive besides 10hp. The adavnced timing and fuel maps help with advanced applications...HC, nitrous. And if u combine it with other mods it is even more effective. Synergy is when mods enhance one another. Anyways i figured it would be a cheap effective way to give me more power. Anyways I am focusing on getting my plug wires and cams so unless i hear somethin definative like either a swap or flash i am figuring its a dead point. By the way the RSX is like 150-160hp while the RSXS is 200hp. but they have very low wheel hp and torque...125 ft/lbs for the RSXS. These cars also have serious honda engine tweeking while the p5 doesnt. Cams...intake...exhaust...header...ecu efficency and engine efficency upgrades can help the p5 alot. Our engine is really just a dumb version of the j-spec so the potential is there. I probably can keep with a 02 SI or a RSX and always handle as well or better...with the cams i could be beating them. Please let me know any more about the mp3 ecu flash

You guys are correct that every 2.0L FS Protege ECU can be reflashed more or less...but most dealerships will not do it for various reasons like mentioned....The ECU needs to be cracked by an aftermarket tuning company...cracking ECU requires tons of man hours for the company and needs a strong community of people that will benefit it...the 2.0L has only been around for 3 years on a protege (in which case it used the current ECU, older FS using Mazda vehicles had different ECU's), and will be gone by next spring...probably no company will even attempt it...

even worse (meaning the fact that we probably won't get it), once the ECU is cracked you theoretically have a programmable stock ECU...if someone figures out everything that makes it tick, you can use various laptop powered "loaders" to make changes...and use loop triggers to deactivate closed/open loop transition points or make the ECU run on one or the other...deactivating closed loop would allow "chips" to actually make a difference...and you don't have to worry about cold/hot start programming, high load auxilary maps, or any of the other s*** that makes a standalone so difficult to tune...

Flyin' Protege had an extra ECU roaming the states for that very reason...

It has been lost in the shuffle I think though. Who knows where it is or if it's been "cracked.":(

well i wanted to get ahold of perfworks since he is in NJ but no response. Maybe when i go to fall nationals @ raceway park there will be someone but i doubt it...What would be entailed in hacking a ecu....is the software easy to work with. I have seen ECU utilities for domestic computers using a PDA...$350 for the wire and software though...Should i contact flyin protege..supposdly one of their peoples is in NJ.

First they need to figure out the fuel mapping for closed loop, or find the trigger sensor readings for switching modes...closed loop is the culprit for the ECU being so restrictive...a modern OBD-II ECU utilizing a dual mode setup has a tough time using just one mode...Wideband O2 sensors are sometimes needed for full open loop ECU operation (that is in OBD-II B-series Honda applications anyways, this does not mean a FS's ECU will require one)...Most likely a complete open loop operative cycle for the FS's ECU is impossible...The processing software and hardware need to be able to detect and change various requirements extremely quickly...especialy when detonation is a problem (high rpm, high loads, or very hot operating conditions)...

I am very unclear on the benefits of closed/open loop modes...My guess is that open loop offers very efficient running (and emission purposes) on a Protege, and then the closed loop is capable of creating a rich fuel/air mixture for safety at full throttle...yes it sucks power, but keeps detonation and engine integrity ok...I don't think our ECU can incorporate an open loop only only operation with the stock sensors and hardware...so until someone can figure out a way to re-flash the entire mapping data for closed loop, there will be no way to change to memory of what is in there...The dealership can do it, but they only have the copies of MP3 maps, and there is a lot more potential than just those...we need a company that can figure out every single restrictive maps language and rewrite them with more aggressive maps, yet still be safe...until then we will have no way of determining how to go about what to re-flash the ECU with...

Well like i mentioned about the pda..there are domestic OBDII applications where the ecu can be modified...not a plug and play or standalone...an actual reader/ adjuster for fuel maps and timing..This would be the best bet. Either that or a fully programable HKS unit. I saw a write up in Super Street and it was a ridiculous OS and ECU..only problem was that only a "licensed" HKS technician could tune them. But if i could get mp3 maps i would be ecstatic...

I am unclear on what you mean...The HKS units are actually a replacement standalone right, being a replacement ECU for the stock one? almost every compact Honda ECU has been successfully cracked, and a lot of devices are available to re-flash them with..the process of "cracking" an ECU involves determining what programming language the coding is in, and what software/hardware is needed to do it...Theoretically any flashable ECU is capable of being reprogrammed, not neccesarily in a user-friendly way though...it will never be as easy as a complete replacement standalone, which can pretty much be done by anyone after initial tuning...

Yeah I know...thats why i mentioned the OBDII ford and GM reprogrammers. the HKS is a wish list item. And if anyone knows how to crack the ECU on the p5 let me know

I can verify this. My friend who works for mazda as a salesman and asked his friend in the shop if it was possible. Word for word this is almost exactly what he said.

Forgive me for I am ingorant in this area, Why is it that MP5 owners want the MP3 ecu MP3 owners want the MP5 ecu? How does each one better the other car?

MP3 ecu on p5/protege means that you'll get more hp & tq for a quick trade..

mp3 owners want a p5 ecu..b/c it doesn't have the advanced timing..when it comes to turboing a mp3 the ecu w/ the advanced timing can cause detonation..which is why mp3 owners only run like 6psi!

alright ladies, I suck...everytime I mentioned closed loop in this thread refer to open loop...and vice versa...open loop refers to every sensor but the MAF being monitored not closed like I said, and closed loop utilizes all the sensors...I had them reversed...sorry...
