ok, playing a "guess that sound" game.... i hear a "boing" when i hit a bump... sounds like it's coming from the front right tire area... is this a stabalizer bar broken? if so, how easy to replace?

and, my over drive no longer works... what could be the cause of that? wiring? or transmission?

this car is a POS in my opinion.

No idea on the "boing" sound. Could be any number of things. Strut, worn suspension bushings, loose spring, piece of wire stuck in the suspension.

If overdrive doesn't work, how do the other gears work? Does it shift normally into all the other gears? Do you get a cel? I don't know much about auto's on these cars, but on domestic cars, when you have transmission problems the ecm usually throws a code.

Like JoshP5 asked, how many miles? How long have you owned the car?

Don't be so quick to judge the car. These cars have been pretty dependable for most of us on this board, but all cars can have mechanical issues.

Either, obviously.

Check for codes before doing anything else.

If it's a 2002 (button overdrive on shifter) I'd guess it's most likely wiring in and around the shifter. Take that apart and look for loose wires or a dirty contact on the overdrive button itself. The manual is here:

If it's a 2003 (no button on shifter) and the car won't go into 4th then it is unlikely it has anything to do with the wiring around the shifter and you'll most likely need to visit a transmission shop or a Mazda dealer.

it's an 02... button on the shifter... one day it was fine, then i just happened to notice it wasnt working any more.

it's my wife's car, she's the original owner/crasher of the car. 96K on it now and it's been through brakes after brakes after brakes. engine seems good for the most part.

i've been told struts are an issue, however it doesnt "feel" like that.

i'll take the shifter apart and see what is up with the wiring, i'd be lucky if it were that easy though.

Have the engine computer read at an auto parts store. Most do it for free. Even though you may not have a check engine light, the computer stores problem messages it received from its sensors, which could help diagnose the problem

96K and the car has been crashed and you think it's a POS because it's having problems? I think it's to be expected at this point.

THIS car is a POS, i'm not even going to debate that... maybe yours and everyone elses is great... but like i said... THIS CAR is a POS.

I've seen & heard many times that pets & cars are reflections of their owners to a certain degree. IDK, maybe that has something to do with it? How much positive reinforcement or help do you expect to get comin on this forum while talkin s*** about these cars to the very people who dig them? Every car can be a POS if people let them just like every one has the possibility to dazzle if you throw enough money at it. All automatics inherently have potential for more problems due to their complexity no matter what car it may be in? The tranny in yours is a POS the car is fine.

She must drive it like a PHYSCO. I have only replaced my pads once in 100,000.
