2007 MS3
My CEL came on tonight. It is P2177. Can anyone help me out with this. The only mods that I have is the BEGi cold air box and a Forge Bypass valve. Thanks in advance for the help.

this is for System Too Lean off Idle (Bank 1) . We've seen this on a few MS3s with a variety of modifications. I don't know that any one thing activates this code, but in more than a few circumstances the car has not actually been lean at all.

Ok, that's a start. This how bad I suck, but how would I actually know if my car was to lean off idle. The person that just checked my car also mention my Mass Air Flow sensor being bad.

The P2177 and P2187 codes are likely caused from the intakes. Put your stock box on clear all the codes then drive around for a week or two. If the light comes back on your stock for the dealer visit anyway. Some guys have been talking about temp changes and being low on gas and getting these codes but I don't know. Also Ken is talking about the swirl shutter valve recall with pcm reprogram not the motor mount. I just figured we should be 100% on that.

if the mass air sensor were faulty, the car would run terrible

The car is running great.

It has been rather cold lately. Go figure, I waited all that time for my intake, and it might be the cause of my problem. I am going to switch back to the stock intake and see what happens.

Thanks.

The stock box is back on. I must love this car to be working on it in 25 degree weather.

haha i feel your pain. i'm installing a cobb sri and redoing my fmic clamps tomorrow. did you clear the code by disconnecting the battery?

Yep. The car ran fine today.

Well, BEGI said they hadn't gotten any CELs but they probably haven't run their test car in 25 degree weather. What about the blowoff valve, did you leave it on , take it off, or tighten the connections? In any case, if you put the BEGI box back on and get a CEL, you'll know that the cold weather tipped it over into lean territory.

I left the Forge bypass valve on. I just put the green spring in it instead of the blue. I checked and double check all the connections and everything is fine. After I get my car inspected in January I might put it back on. I won't be driving it much because I don't want to get caught out in any bad weather. If it was the cold weather that tripped the CEL, I find that odd. I have had SRI's on other cars and never had a problem. I have a fealing that the BEGi box will not be going back on. I should have just saved my money and purchased the MazdaSpeed CAI. Thank goodness I have birthday money coming my way.

I'm pulling the same code, but with a MS CAI and TS BPV/BOV. Its not 25 degrees here in Houston, but mine was triggered after getting the ECU reflashed by the dealer.

I'll try putting the stock BOV and see if that clears it, if not, I guess i'll put on the stock air box.

Interesting. I too just had my ECU reflashed by the dealer. I don't know. Either way I am pissed that I have parts that should be on my car instead of in my basement.

P2187 (close to a P2177)

1. Check long-term and short-term fuel trim, specification is 0% + or -10%. If the long term fuel trim and short-term fuel trim is normal at this time, check for a possible sticking purge solenoid.

2. If the fuel trims are positive (plus 25%) clamp off the hose going to the purge solenoid to see if the fuel trims will come back into specification.

3. If the fuel trims do not come back in specification, check Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor grams/sec at idle, specifications (2.5 to 2.9).

4. If low, try cleaning the MAF sensor. If it does not improve, replace the MAF sensor.

This is from a Mazda 6 on our program.

My guess is that you have a simple vacuum leak somewhere.

1. Where is the purge solenoid located. Look, I am a total noob to this car.

2. See 1.

3. ????

4. I checked MAF sensor when I put the stock box back on. It appeared to be clean. How would I go about cleaning it if it was dirty?

Honestly if the CEL comes back on, it is going back to the dearlership to be looked at.

Very interesting. The recall "problem" was for failure to trigger a CEL when it should have been triggered under CA emissions standards (I think). Don't fault BEGI just yet, since the MS-CAI is doing something similar after the emissions recall. Maybe there'll be others of us getting this CEL, too. Maybe we'll see if the lack of an air-straightener is a factor.

That information is technical because our program is made for techs not DIY'ers. I presented it because I feel that your dealer needs to look at the purge solenoid. Ours is the swirl valve, apparently. Just put the stock stuff on and off you go to the dealer!
