overheating isssues

I need some help.. I have a 97 protege lx and it keeps getting got any time I am driving around 60 miles per hr. I think the timing could be off and that could be the problem.. however I am not sure. The car had issues from the previous owner who apparently decided to hold things together like the air intake hose with duct tape.. This is my girlfriends car and I am working on it.,. any help would be appreciated.. I have already replaced the spark plugs, valve cover gasket, the front o2 sensor, the transmission filter and fluid, changed the oil and filter, installed a new fan motor for the second fan, and a few other things. The temperature drops when I turn on the AC but then there is a smell of burning oil... The valve gasket is not leaking and the oil levels are fine... I just dont know where to go... I dont want to have to install a new thermostat, do the timing and flush the radiator but should I just to all of them? Please help

if you are having overheating issue, why would you NOT want to check the cooling system? a new thermostat will only be a couple of bucks, and same with new coolant-water.

try to check your thermostat, heater core, a clogged radiator or bad fuel pump should also be considered. also it could be that you need a new mazda air intake hose.

Yea that was the first thing i replaced.. The previous owner had duct tapped it together... as soon as I opened the hood and saw that I replaced it..

I've got the same problem with my car and the thermostat's been replaced twice. We're wondering if there isn't a problem with the computer. Eventually, I'm doing a rebuild anyway, including a new radiator & hoses.
