Orange gear position indicator (PRNDL light) disappears intermittently

Has anyone ever heard of the problem I’m having with my 2014 Mazda CX-5?

This is the problem:

• The orange gear position indicator (PRNDL light) on the dash disappears intermittently.
• When it disappears, the vehicle behaves as if it’s in neutral, pressing gas pedal only makes engine rev.
• When I move the shifter to another gear, the indicator reappears and the car goes back into gear.

I would expect a defective or miss-adjusted shifter switch

2014 ... Isn't that a physical cable out to the transmission ?
