2003.5. MAZDASPEED PROTEGE
Hows everyone doing? Hope all is well. I purchased an MSP last year, after owning numerous nissans i must say....MAZDA>NISSAN haha. But out of all seriousness, I'm pulling my motor to replace the head gasket,(noticed some loss in compression along with some oil around the head and on the block). While i had the motor out, i wanted to do some internal work to it, ex. pistons, pater rods etc; or just go with an EMS. I'm not trying to put out any crazy numbers yet...just trying to get an extra kick from what i have now. Also I'm trying to keep it under/around 2G. Any opinions or recommendations are welcome! (cool)

My opinion? Start a third thread....

Like i said, I'm not trying to go balls out at the moment...just trying to get a little more kick then where I'm at now. All I'm asking for is a personal opinion-not criticism

he wasnt criticizing, just pointing out that you havent done your research. for under 2gs you can make this a fun ******* car, you have to realize we are real light compared to wrx's sti's evo's etc, plus less drivetrain loss so less hp goes more for our cars then theirs, that being said 2gs will get you:
Ebay FMIC - $230
SSAFC - $200 (used)
Exhaust - $500
MFactory LSD - $600
MBC - $100
WBO2 - $200
Boost gauge - $70
there you go, throw those mods on, set it to 8-9psi depending on how ballsy you feel like being, and give it a NICE tune, and it should be a sweet little car.

Thanks, I already have some work done to it:
Turbonetics T3/T04e 50 trim turbo W.Wastegate Open Dump Tube Spool exhaust manifold,Turbonetics Evolution wastegate,Spearco Intercooler,Custom Solid Stainless Steel FMIC pipe kit,HKS SSQV v.1 blowoff valve, Greddy SP2 Cat-Back. Its a blast to drive-I'll catch myself finding a reason to go out just to drive the car. Just wanted to "take it to the next level" so to speak..I'm just not too familiar w. these cars and the best way to tune them.

haha nice work done! i would save a little extra and forge it, then itll really be one fun machine! save the 2 gs till you can afford a forged engine, i think they go for like 3,500 at speed circuit now.

You can probably go forged for around 2gs. If your block and crank are good (just get them machined locally). Then get the goodies you need for the rebuild. Weisco pistons and k1 rods will be good for your power goals. Then you can just get oem everything else and it would probably cost around 2gs. I'm planning to do that build next year and after the help of my friend (whom built a motor before) he said we could build my bottom end around 2gs total.

Thanks for the ideas guys-its great help. I just ordered some Pauter Forged Rods and Wiseco 9.0:1 Forged Pistons, most likely I'll start pulling everything apart tomorrow. I read somewhere that the wrx 440cc injectors are direct drop ins on the MSP, can anyone vouch that? Also, anyone know where i could find bolts for my t3/t4? need at least 3 to bolt my turbo to mani, but ive had no luck finding the correct size

The WRX for the 02-05 are direct drop in. They are light blue and can be had for around 100 bucks.

that car needs a good tune far more than it needs forged rods and pistons. you would be way better off taking the 2 grand and investing in things like standalone, knockliight, intake manifold, boost control, and a good tune from a reputable person in your area than a forged motor. itll push you to around 250whp no problem. going forged is great if you want 400 to the wheels, but that t3/t04e has enough juice to blow a forged motor if you have no idea what youre doing and arent tuning to pull timing or keep the fueling lean. itll be a nice buffer, but ultimately, youre going to run into other issues if you dont tune it properly first.

and if you are going forged, save up for sti pink 565cc injectors and skip the 440s unless you plan to use EMS that can't drive the 565's... and go read more!!
