I find I cant open the lift gate with the dash button when sitting in the car with the engine running and transmission in park when doors are closed. If I open the door the button will activate the lift gate. I could swear that in the past I was able to. Whats going on?

Look at the settings. There is an option there, when you switch to P, the doors unlock automatically, when you switch from P to Drive, doors are locking etc. Maybe you've changed something and forgot about it.

Speaking of lift gate, I've had my CX5 for 1 year and only last month I noticed a lock button to the far right of the license plate lights lol. What other hidden secrets have I not discovered? Hmmm
Sorry for jacking your thread, but yeah I ran into the same issue and realized I had to unlock all doors for the lift gate dash button to work. I know you can change it but I've decided to leave mine like that. My doors unlock after ignition is off.

Are you sure you were in park because it happened to me but I was in drive with the foot on the brake and my wife waiting outside to access the trunk. I've learned my lesson since... :ROFLMAO:

I've set mine to disable auto locking and auto unlocking.

That only works when you unlock the doors. If the doors are locked, the tailgate won’t open via the dashboard.

Settings -> Vehicle settings -> Doors... And depending on your infotainment version, look at the options under the "Doors" menu. Look for "Automatic Door Locks" ( latest infotainment generation) or "Auto Door Lock Mode" for the previous infotainment.
Once you get there you should see options like these:

Lock: Out of Park | Unlock: in Park
Lock: Shifting out of Park
Lock: When driving | Unlock: in Park
Lock: When driving | Unlock: IGN Off

These are options in my car (2020 6th gen infotainment ) and I think I have the first option selected. Same principle applies for the latest infotainment software.

One time, I just remembered this detail, I was going through a US Customs check point, inland check point ( those of you living close to the US border may know what I am talking about ), and I stopped at the kiosk and one of the CBP guys wanted to check the trunk so I pressed the button and the trunk didn't open. After a quick WTF moment I realised that the shifter was in Drive so once I moved it to P, pressed the button again and voila, the trunk opened. So, beside the Door settings, I think the system is designed so you can't open the trunk if the shifter is in Drive.

It's an unlock button.
