Oil Filter - What gives?

Okay, so I tried to do the very first oil change on my Mazda3 2.0L the other day. I went to the auto parts store and picked up 5 quarts of Mobil-1 5W20 and a Mobil-1 oil filter. I get under the car, drain the oil, and then go to remove the oil filter. It looks like a normal spin-on oil filter, and that is certainly the type that they parts dude sold me.

BUT, this filter will not budge. My filter wrench only succeeded in bending the casing on the filter, but it would not come off at all. It doesn't LOOK like anything is holding it in place. But, am I wrong? What does it take to get this thing off?

Thanks in advance.

Original filters are sometimes difficult to remove. They do just screw on. I don't know what type wrench you are using.

In my opinion this type wrench is not good, they apply pressure in one area and will bend the case on a stubborn filter.

One like this works much better. I have used one for years.

I also have one like this that works very well. Found it at Sears.

Most good parts places should have a good selection of filter wrenches.
I assume you are turning it the right direction for removal, it's right hand thread, just remember the direction changes when the filter hangs down.

Ok thanks for the info. I knew that had to be the case, but I just wanted to make sure. I've done a million oil changes but this car is new to me so a sanity check was in order.

When you put everything you have into removing something, and it doesn't budge, it makes you think twice about what you're doing :)

btw: The oil drain plug came out with almost no effort, so maybe the 12 year old kid in the car factory got it backwards and hand-tightened the drain bolt put put 50lb-ft of torque on the oil filter :)
