Oil Filter Relocation and Oil Cooling pt.2

Ok...I emailed www.tdperformance.com regarding their oil filter relocation kits and its compatibility with the P5 and MP3. I was directed to this company as a result of search/discussing on the Probetalk.com forums. The 1158 and 1258 were suppose to work, but they replied with this:

"could you confirm if the 1158 and 1258 oil filter
re-location kit will work with the 2002-2003 Protg5, MP3 and Mazdaspeed
Protg."

This doesn't make sense because they list the Rx7 has a application on their website...and as per some more searching and our P5/MP3 share the same filter....

I'm not sure if they actually confirmed whether or not it works...and simply replied without doing any work.

Moreover, a few probe guys are using their kits....strange...

tru, call up hks and see if it works on oure car to while youre at it , and let us know once you get a kit together, and can the lines be streached to put the oil cooler in front grill ?

the 626,mpv,rx-7,929,millenia,miata,323,mx-6,mx-3 ALL use the same oil filter fitting size

like I said.... the issue is plumbing... how much line is needed, where the cooler is to be mounted, etc

ok....i was going to do my own write up...but I have a couple of other projects that need my attention....but take a look at these two sites. They have all the information you would need to create your own kit.

The challenge will be to find room for both the relocation kit and the oil cooler. You can go with either a simple relocation of the filter and go with 2 filters and increase oil capacity which will help reduce the temperature and increase oil life and increase duration between oil changes. Or add the intercooler for added cooling...


One thing I do recommend is the thermostat; to regulate a proper level of oil temperature.

There are many options to choose from...including fans...and

I am not sure if this will work properly with the MSPs as they already have a radiator fluid cooled....oil cooler.

Am I right in assuming that the sandwich adapter (under the "Mocal Thermostats" tab in the general index of http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/) is a thermostat that only allows flow to the cooler at certain temps? Meaning if the oil is too cold (nice crisp winter morning) then it just goes to the oil filter, and when it's hot, it goes to the oil cooler and then filter (or vice versa). It looks to me like it eliminates the need for an oil filter relocation adapter and a separate thermostat. If so, that would be sweet, all you'll need is this sandwich adapter and an actual oil cooler (of course hoses, clamps, etc.) and you're set.

Great thread. I think this is a very good project, especially for guys that 'track' their cars.

Some in the MSP community have questioned the need for an AM oil cooler since we already have the Mazdaspeed cooler. From what I have learned on the Prelude boards however (similar oil cooler design), the MSP cooler is probably not very efficient at cooling oil because:

1) Temperature Delta - The exchange medium is coolant which is not much cooler than the oil (200F+ at temperature).
2) Dwell Time - The oil simply does not have enough time in the cooler itself to reduce the temperature by much.

As long as we can maintain oil pressure, the radiator-type oil cooler will be much, much better for reducing oil temps.

I think that the time and money spent on this type of project, would provide so many long term benefits; longer engine life, longer oil life, increased oil capacity....but most importantly ....a very cool looking modification.

I'm not sure about the benefits of an oil cooler...
For a full our race application, agreed, it is perfect/necessary.
But for a street car?
One of the benefits of HOT oil is that it will burn off any of the extra crap it picks up, decreasing the oil temp will decrease this capability, allowing all this extra carbon/junk/etc to stay in the oil system, therefore staying in the engine.
Having an extra filter with your system may return the cleaning capability to stock.
So what are the results?
Extra cost for oil changes (more oil, two filters now).
A pretty mod.
But that's just my opinion.

That spin on adapter is a cap that you put int he original oil filtermoutnt htat replaces it with fittings to run oil lines to other places..

There are two ways to go....one filter or two... you can reloate your oil filter(s) or use the spin to add the connections needed for a oil intercooler....

If done properly regulating your oil temperature to around 200 F is optimal for overall performance.

I don't think you would see any benefit on a NA application, but for those running FI...its a serious application to consider.

engine oil in late model engines run VERY hot already.... if you understand the history of engine operating temperatures, they've been slowly increasing the operation temperature over the past 20 years... the whole reason is emissions... BUT hot oil (over 210F/100C) is BAD for the engine.... why? 1) oil loses viscosity and engine parts suffer from lack of lubrication 2) oil cokes 3) oil breaks down into sludge, tar, wax, and other crap

and because of that, oil life is reduced... having an oil cooler CAN extend the life of oil and can allow you to run longer oil change intervals... the european spec protege already has an oil cooler stock (same thing as the msp's) and mazda europe recommends a 6000mile/10000km oil change on REGULAR oil

ideal oil temperatures should be 180-200F

you don't "burn" off any crap inside the engine... that's the job of the oil's additive package... the detergents

can i still use the stock oil filter with this or would i need to get a diffrent one

you would have to make sure that the remote filter mount has the same threads on it that the stock filter has.im not totally sure that the one i posted does..can someone verify that>?

I accually got to see the dual oil filter relocation kit installed 1st hand the other day in a Probe. Those filters are phucking huge!

same here...i saw a dual filter relocation...it was a bit much! but...I took a look at his oil...and it was next to "new" looking. I then asked him how many KMs since his last...he said over 6000 km ago...
