OIL FILTER change -- different size?

Okay, so I changed my oil & filter today.

After swearing and cussing and asking KD where the little buggar was, I removed the stock filter. It was black, and quite short. I was able to remove it by hand.

I then took the filter tha dealership provided me QUOTE: "I NEED THE MSP FILTER" REPLY "HERE YOU GO SIR" *handed me a blue colored filter*.

Now the BLUE colored filter is actually LONGER than the black filter that came off. Did my dealership shank me and provide me the wrong filter, or is it the factory installed filter smaller for some reason?

Please advise.

well i know that when i did my first oil change with a mazda filter it was the same exact size and color but when i did the second one i used a puralator filter and it was a little longer than the oem one but i used it in the next 2 oil changes and it's fine. . i have switched to one of those fram filters now with the black grippy stuff on it and that is the same size as the oem filter . . i would suppose that if it is the same threading and diameter you should be fine cause the only difference in oil volume would only be a couple .oz at most

your fine bro. i like to have a larger filter. it allows you to have more oil in the system. not much but just a little more. and heat is distributed and dispursed a little better. a mazda v6 filter will fit. any larger filter with the same thread will fit. get a big one. they look cool and function better.

Maybe this can help a little - I too like having extra oil in the system.. and if you can use the KL series filter (2.5L v6 from the mx6, etc) then you can ALSO (provided you have space) use the 91-92 corvette ZR-1 filter, which is MONSTER compared to even the mx6 oem oil fitler, and retains a similar pressure anti-flowback valve...

just something to look into.. on my mx6 it pushed my capacity from just under 4 qt to just under 5 qt (to read "full" on the dipstick) oil pressure was relatively unaffected, in fact i got a few psi MORE pressure (particularly on the KL series motor, this was a good thing.. they suffer from HLA tick and the #6 cyl getting a slight drop compared to the rest of the system)

so yeah... ZR1 filter.. huge and possibly compatible with your motors (theyre based on the old FS series blocks in the 4cyl mx6's, etc.. right?)

the ZR1 filter will NOT fit into the msp due to the oil cooler

the B6Y2 filter *was* made by Tennex, it is no longer in production
I have no idea who makes the F2Y0 filter since it is only sold in Canada... if you can take a pic of the filter or post what it says on the filter, then that could probably help... the F2Y0 filter is a V6 oil filter, which will BARELY fit into the msp (it is only about a centimeter away from the intake manifold after installation)

here in the US, the dealers are currently selling the B6Y1 and JEY0 filters made in Austria by Mahle.... the B6Y1 is the 4 cyl filter and the JEY0 is the V6.... in Asia, the filters are made by Tokyo Roki in Japan under the same part #

Is the MSP intake manifold the same as on, say, the MP3? I don't remember what the mp3 IM was like.

hmm... that filter appears to be made by Champion Labs (company that makes the STP filters)... pretty bad... I say order the "JEY0" filters from a US dealer... they are made by Mahl... thick canister construction, well constructed filter pleats, good by-pass valve design and a much better quality O-ring seal
