Oil filter change and recommended filter cap wrench

So I'm at 69,990 miles today and 100miles from Service (oil) reminder. So I got a gallon of 0W-20 Pennzoil (US$23 at wally mart) and used my wonderfully helpful neighbor's garage and ramps. I had a new 6-pack of OEM filters for my 2017 CX-5 and really should have let the car cool down but boy that oil came out hot and fast into the oil drain pan.

I took off my filter 1WPY with a trusty cap wrench that fit for the last few years, cleaned the area and got a new filter out and realized it was not the OEM 1WPY-14-302... that I normally had but the new OEM one is a PE01-14-302B. It is wider than the 1WPY and my cap wrench won't fit. Not so much a problem now, as I only hand tighten to put on.

But thinking ahead to the next 3-4K mile change, I need a different cap wrench. I looked and searched and all the results were that of Mazda owners asking what wrench but answers were not helpful...at all. However, typing this the Already Discussed ? had some useful info and I'll just clarify that there are DIFFERENT sized cap wrenches and Mazda OEM filters.

I don't have a metric rule so I can only guess the 1WPY is 63.5-64mm wide? Where the PE01 is 65-67mm wide? I did find a cheap 65-67mm 14-side cap wrench for US$8 and hope that is correct. I don't have a set and will also get some filter pliers/wrench because ... some things you need to remove and won't by hand alone. I don't want the ratcheting 3-wing kind since you have to hold that, and the strap kind doesn't allow for tight spaces. I also think I may drill a hole in the cap to allow poking out a stuck filter since they get oil on them and not easily extracted from the cap.

Finally to add that since my last change, I used 5W-20 for the Summer and I lost THREE mpg with same range, same driving load. Tires are all inflated correctly. Recent air filter. Not changed gas type (reg vs prem). I'm hoping its true that 0W is better and OEM recommended in the Mazda manual. Might also get some Liqui Moly additive (if you have a suggested site where to get for discount...lmk).

My neighbor was impressed that the Mazda had the filter and drain all in easy access vs his Ford and wife's GMC.

I usually let the oil drain quite a long time, and by the time I get around to removing the filter it has cooled off, which might make it easier to remove.
How long does it usually take for the drip to stop? With the CX I wait for about an hour until the drips are 5 seconds apart.

Without an enclosed garage, I try to wrap things up quickly before nosy neighbors notice that I am engaging in prohibited conduct. 😬

Wow. Sorry not to follow up sooner but just got the OEMTools cap wrench 65-67mm and.. .it does NOT fit. Too small for the ...302B. Too cheap to return so It will end up in the toolbox.
When the oil is hot, best to drain as it cools but I was using a friend's garage and tools as I am selling my home and all tools in storage. Filter needed some effort (not alot) and a wrench not offset doesn't get up there. Since the filter was not the 302B, my original cap wrench worked. Not much effort but heat expands and made hand removal not an option.

The Lisle is neat but I wanted a cap. Should have gotten the Lisle.

I also got a wrench that looks offset 1/2" and can span a few sizes. I'll try in 5K miles.

I just want a cap wrench to fit this 302B as I have 5 more filters left from a 6pack. that is 25K more miles of changes. Would be nice if someone has calipers that can take mm measurement of the ..302B filter. I don't have a set. If its 68mm or 70mm, that would explain why none of my cap filters don't work. (it can't be 74 since the OEMtools is just a wee bit off. 67mm and say, 2mm off each side would be 71mm.

As far as time, it took a total of from on and off ramps of 20mins. That is remove cover, drain oil, wait till nothing but one drop a minute, clean and put 17mm (I got rid of the stupid hex allen OEM oil plug) with crush washer, remove filter, clean, new filter, tighten by hand only. Replace lower cover screws and tree fasteners. Then fill oil. cap on and wait a minute, check dipstick, wipe and recheck, replace, close hood. Back off ramps and pour used oil back in jug. Run a bit, reset maintenance. DING 20mins.
(thank neighbor for use of garage, tools, nitrile gloves, pigmat and taking used oil to recycler).

I have Mazda (factory-installed) PE01-14-302B and 1WPE-14-30 filters and steel cup-type wrenches that fit both, so I figured I should grab my calipers and collect some measurements.

I discovered that you can't assume the labeled and the actual size of cup wrenches are the same.

The PE01-14-302B filter, recently removed from my new 2025 CX-5, measures 66.4 mm across the flutes. The wrench I have that fits it perfectly is an Imperial IF-6814. I assume the 68 in the part number is meant to indicate 68 mm and the 14 indicates 14 flutes. Per my calipers, it's actually 66.6 mm. I bought the filter from a Suzuki motorcycle dealer a long time ago. I see that eBay currently has a "SUZUKI OIL FILTER WRENCH IF-6814" for sale, and the same filter shows up at numerous other vendors in a google search on "Imperial IF-6814". Might be a good idea to get one if you have a stash of Tokyo Roki Mazda PE01-14-302B filters.

As for the Mazda 1WPE-14-30 filter, the wrench I have that fits it well is by Performance Tool (PT), from AutoZone, and it is labeled 65/67. That is, it has two rings of flutes, the inner ring being slightly smaller than the outer, so it will fit two different size filters, theoretically 65 mm and 67 mm, per the part number.
The inner, smaller flutes fit the 1WPE-14-30 filter well.
I measured the flutes on the filter and found them to be 64.1 mm across.

I also have a HyperTough (Walmart) wrench labeled 65/67, so you would think it would be the same size as the AutoZone PT 65/67 wrench. Not so! The HyperTough wrench is too small to fit the Mazda 1WPE-14-30 filter. However, it does fit a FRAM XG6607 filter, if you're brave enough to use one of those. (I say "brave enough" because there was a documented case of the anti-drainback valve from a FRAM XG6607 getting sucked out of the filter and plugging the oil gallery on a Mazda 2.5L engine, destroying it.)
